Funnier even than "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", and yet it was a commercial flop, but why? Political incorrectness? Patriotic pride and sensitivity? Difficult to say. But America could really afford to laugh at itself more than us Brits, because, apart from Hawaii, your home territory was never attacked like ours, yet we still made comedies about the war. The pacing and the laughs never let up, driven on by what must be the catchiest background music ever. And what wild dancing! Today's zombie-like twitching is hardly recognisable as the same activity.
Has the look & feel of an oldie. A little blurry. Lowbrow, slapstick humor. A young teen might enjoy this. It rates 4 or 5 out of 10 for me. Seems they couldn't make up their mind as to the exact genre. The fear during WW2 was real enough; and the movie could have dealt with it seriously. Or, as humor, it could have been more sophisticated, or at least funnier.
There are, however, some laughs & some good action.
This movie is a real sleeper. I never see it, or talk to anybody about it, and I cannot figure out why. It is a fun pic, bursting with young talent that you should watch and tell your friends about.
