This is a fantastic film. Such classic acting and dialogue, just pure brilliance. None of this gung-ho glorious Saving Private Ryan rubbish, but stripped down and honest WWII style. 5/5

This sweeping epic covers a little-known part of WW2, namely the fighting that was meant to enable the Allies to bypass the German defenses from the north. The film does a good job of conveying events and feelings. I gave it 8/10, despite its non-digital fuzziness.
this is one of the all time great war films, my top five for sure. i saw this back when i was 9and even at that age i was glued to the tv. what a cast the best of the best from 1977, concider watching ice cold in alex, the longest day, dam busters and look up the film about douglas barder sorry folks the name of the film slips my mind 5/5 all of them, happy viewing
top notch film 5/5 as war films go, pity about no subtitles for the german parts but hey cant win em all. Deffo reccomend the book as it goes into more detail its by Cornelius Ryan.

One of the the top war movies with an incredible cast of many famous names.
Perhaps a bit drawn out but nevertheless good entertainment and basically factually correct.
Although i doubt this movie could have told you all details about operation Market Garden not forgetting to convey the biggest statement of a considered blunder of WW2, this movie does depict in some isolated grandeur and with much of an interesting interpretation as well of many characters and big name actors of the time, a story that will far exceed your expectations.Well worth the watch because on the whole you can see no dime was spared to make this one grandiose.
What a great cast, and a very well made movie. Accurate for the most part, the message is clear - war is hell. How can people do this to one another? It makes me so sad, I hope an event of WW2 size and scale of killing and destruction never happens on our planet again. Very much worth the time to watch. Excellent in every respect. 5/5
Operation Market Garden was the anti-D Day, in that it was a logistical disaster. British lost almost an entire Airborne Division. Whatever advantage in ground the operation achieved, it lost in men with elite training and experience, support aircraft, and most significantly, momentum. The problems were rooted in logistics and hasty planning and despite the military spin, serves as a cautionary tale against over confidence and rushed planning. One of the subtle points the film makes is how Montgomery's name is bandied about as the architect of the plan, though his character never appears in the movie except as a thrid person reference. The operation was drawn up on paper by people distant from the action, and the primary players were given unreasonable objectives and means. Unfavorable intelligence was ignored. The operation should have been named "operation Christmas Tree Lights" as the fatal characteristic was that it only needed one bridge capture to fail to undermine the whole plan. To be fair, the lightning push into the lowlands wasn't solely competition driven indicated by the film. There was also the matter of the V-2 rockets being launched upon London from the coast. Also, the Dutch underground wasn't simply ignored out of convenience. The Germans had compromised the integrity of the Dutch Underground through Operation Northstar, a counter-espionage plot in which the Germans had been wiring false intelligence through captured agents. All-in-all, many would agree that MG should never have been attempted or at least better planned and executed. The allies would probably have eventually captured the same territory with less casualties and more resources going to Patton for his push across the Rhine. Another unmentioned side note is that this whole fubar could have been avoided if Monty hadn't blown his opportunity to capture Antwerp soon after the break out and with the ports and canal intact. Overall, the men who fought this battle have to be commended for their valor and tenacity.
A good film which not only shows the successes for the allies but also their shortcomings. It documents a campaign as complicated as the D-day landings, but was conceived and implemented in only nine days.
