"A Very Long Engagement" tells the story of a young woman's relentless search for her fiancée, who has disappeared from the trenches of the Somme during World War One.
I hadn't noticed that the links here apparently do not work, whether they have English subtitles or not, in fact I saw this film on another site in French with good English subtitles, and subsequently on a Megavideo site in Spanish, and enjoyed both versions. However, it was impossible to make any comment on either site. My comments here are still valid and I strongly recommend viewers to seek this movie elsewhere.
A Triumph Of Love And The Human Spirit: Don't Miss It!
A beautiful story from an extremely messy, disgusting war, that gleams like a precious stone dropped in the mud. The two main characters keep their childlike innoncence throughout despite their sufferings and anxieties. I found especially moving the way Mathilde says, "If I reach the bend before his car passes, he will come back to me" and "If the ticket inspector comes into the compartment right now then Manech is still alive" (just like a child walking over the cracks in the pavement for good luck). And then still like a child she refuses to give up hope when neither omen proves favourable!
[SPOILER]
And at the end when Manech sees Mathilde again and not recognising her, asks "Ça te fait mal quand tu marches?/Does it hurt when you walk?" (she had polio when little and limps badly). This is exactly what he said to her when she was nine and he twelve, proving that despite the incredible ordeal he has been through that has cost him his memory, he is, inside, still the friendly, guileless child she used to know
. The subtitles are a faithful translation for once, and just as well because I have read comments by French people who said that some of the dialogue was too rapid for (even) them to catch everything that was said.
The movie is quite complex and many-facetted, so that two viewings are recommended to grasp most of what happens. It is one of those films one willingly sees again. Look out for Jodie Foster of "Taxi Driver" and "Silence of the Lambs" fame. She went to a French lycée as a young girl and speaks perfect French with a slight Parisian accent, so that I didn't realise it was her till I read the cast list. Surprisingly the ambient mood is not all doom and gloom, and there is a great deal of gentle humour too, such as when Mathilde plays the tuba on the shore of the Atlantic, an instrument she had chosen "because it sounds like a fog-horn". (10/10)
i HATE subtitles, but i made an exception with this movie when i bought it and i LOVED it..i cried like a baby when i watched this movie..it was like even though it was in a different language i understood sometime without peeking at the subtitles!!Bravo!!
