A Powerful Message, But In 1939 They Were At It Again!
The Tudou link has apparently fewer frames per second but it is much sharper than Megavideo and the sound is better.
This is a movie that should be seen by all children and boys in particular to show them that military glory is largely a myth and war is sheer hell to be avoided if at all possible. The 1930 version of Remarque's "Im Westen Nichts Neues" is a lot better than the 1979 remake, in which only the veteran actors Ernest Borgnine and Ian Holm shine. Even Donald Pleasance is disappointing, and Richard (John-boy)Thomas who plays Paul Baumer is certainly not of the calibre of Lew Ayres.
This 1930 version is rather theatrical and declamatory, which was the style at that time, except for Louis Wolheim, the ugliest man in Hollywood ever, who plays Kat, and his long-nosed freeloading sidekick, who manage to be naturalistic. However, the staginess does not make the story any less moving or detract from its pacifistic message. Remember the original version was made only eleven years after the Armistice, and Louis Milestone the director had actually been a volunteer in the 1914-18 War on the American side. Another version is due in 2010. Let's hope it is worthy of the original book and film.

My teacher made us watch this movie for class, and I didn't regret it. It really captured the emotions that the soldiers felt when they were out in those trenches.
