Terry Gilliam is one of the few directors who boggles the imagination. Things you've never dreampt off appear on screen in any number of his films. Like Kurt Vonnegut, he is dark, futuristic, and funny.
Brazil is basically Orwell's 1984, but perhaps a little more warped. When it was first finished in 1985, the studio told Gilliam that it was too long. After watching the entire 142 minute film, I can safely say that it doesn't feel too long at all. If anything, I'd be inclined to say that it's almost not long enough. The whole experience starts with a number of fantasy segments, in which the hero, Sam Lowery( played by Jonathan Pryce) is an arc angel of sorts, flying among the clouds. All these segments are beautiful and very imaginative.
The studio wanted not only wanted to cut those wonderful dream sequinces, but also to cut the not-so-warm-and-fuzzy ending, which I'll not spoil here.
It also stars Robert De Niro and Micheal Palin. It may very well be the best film of the 80's.
that version with the cut ending was the version that turned into a classic in my family. when i saw the real ending a few years after i had moved out and told my family, they were all very upset, but i like the not so warm and fuzzy ending waay better
5/5
worth your time to see many many times
Never seen a movie quite like this! Odd, strange, wierd etc, but still kept me watching till the end! 9.5/10. Quite the unique film. Kind of reminds me of how the U.S. government is quickly becoming!
I really like this movie I had the chance to have seen it so many years ago and It still is a strange/funny/enjoyable movie. Also a great sound track I listen 2 it often great background music.
One of my favorites from the library of Gilliam I had the pleasure of speaking with the soundtrack composer Michael Kamden once long ago. Anyone remember the lovely Kate Bush take on the title tune? Mad magazine winks and nods and is Sam a bit narcoleptic? I wish I could just fall asleep and dream like that. Oh, I get it now. 10/10 or 5/5
A dystopian black comedy directed by Terry Gilliam. The tale of a young man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living in a tiny apartment, set in a world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather quirky) machines. Brazil's bureaucratic, dictatorial government is reminiscent of the regime portrayed in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, excluding that it has a slapstick quality, and lacks any figurehead. A must see cult film in my opinion.
Weird - what else can you say - beautifully filmed - very Gilliam in its style. Long - too long maybe. All in all worth a look but for me it lacked something..
Terry Gilliam has such a visual style.
He always manages to include a fair amount of humor mixed with tragedy.
In my opinion, it leaves that half smile with eyes wide open effect on your face.
Brilliant!
Brazil: A Film Not As Far From America As You Might Think..
A dark comedy, that may be foreboding an even darker reality, from American director Terry Gilliam.
In the totalitarian future, a worker of the state finds solace, comfort and the realization of his dreams within the arms of beautiful woman that he perceives to be an enemy of the state.
This excellent adaptation of Orwell's 1984, is a bit less depressing than the original film starring John Hurt. Great film for all cinemaphiles. 5/5
I saw this in the theaters when it came out, and I can't remember what it was about because I went to see it stoned. I do remember that I seemed to form the opinion that it was an excellent to movie to see while stoned, but any clue as to plot or storyline, I have none. I remember it was very surreal, very pretty and that I enjoyed myself. So, I recommend it to stoners.
BTW I've trod the straight and narrow since those days. For the most part. I look very innocent when I'm asleep..LOL
terry gilliams films are always entertaining. he is one of the few to make movies he would like to watch.his imagination is boundless. brazil just shows what a talented and gifted filmaker can do even though he get relatively small budgets.
