Intriguing philosophical drama and different from any film I've ever seen. Lars Von Trier is a very good director..his approach to making films is unique and very unusual, and I admire him for that. I've seen this film and "Antichrist" so far..and both are excellent in my opinion.
Splendid acting here; it reels you in. Also, the ending is fantastic; it really drives home the point of the entire film..and I certainly felt it was worth the wait. In fact, the ending was so good, I raised my overall rating. 4.5/5 stars.
the leads are not american, i get the subtext to be a very deep critique of american "generosity" (quid pro quo!) and our "exporting democracy" abroad. (see def. of polyarchy)
This goes on my list of ten movies you have to watch before you die! This movie is so beautifully done that it almost excapes words to form an explination. The idea is done so simply but executed to the 90th degree that at times you get lost in it and totaly forget that there are no walls, just chalk lines on the floor. If you can survive, the ending is the ultimate award for your patientce! Just stick with it, open a bottle of wine, and watch one of the most unique movies I have seen in a long time.
I remember the panning this got when it came out, but Ive always liked it both as a story with meaning and how its visually done.with a very strong cast.
It is like watching a play but with more than one scene happening at a time although no cross dialogue, but many things are going on in the background.

Great movie very deep. I can actually relate this to our lives today. Although we as humans are very good at hiding our human stains. SAD! SAD! I rate this as 5/5 film.
The film is set in the 30s, and if you hate theatre don't even attempt to watch this. It's boring. For any others,specially those who like theatre, it is the most challenging thing I have ever seen, cause simply it is theatre with minimalistic setting. I think it doesnt matter, cause the story and the acting is so strong, you will forget about this. I thought it was enlightening, liberating and fantastic work. Specially the lighting is so well done! FANTASTIC.

very slow and boring to say the least. It would have been better to listen to it on cd or on the radio as I layed back and shut my eyes whilst it was on and found it more interesting that way although my interest was minimal..
This movie is very different from most. It is more about acting (good acting) and good plot than good special effects and the set. I thought it was some of Nicole Kidmans best work. I think if you enjoy artsy type films you would love this, if you are looking for stuff blowing up, look elsewhere. 4/5
This was the longest, cheapest looking movie I've ever seen. It would have been good if they had shortened the play time and used real props. The plot was great though.
It was like a play i think, Nicole Kidman is a brilliant actress, and i don't this did her any justice unfortunately. It must have been hard & require a lot of effort, but i've seen her in many better films. Paul Bettany was sweet, strange accent though, i'm sure he's English!
