The film follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), who is tied to one of London's most notorious organized crime families. His carefully maintained existence is jarred when he crosses paths with Anna (Naomi Watts), an innocent midwife trying to right a wrong, who accidentally uncovers potential evidence against the family. Now Nikolai must put into motion a harrowing chain of murder, deceit, and retribution.
More of a drama than a mystery/thriller. Movie and story was good, acting was great but it was a bit slow. There were a couple of action scenes in the movie. I would recommend this to someone who is looking for a good drama with a hint of thrill to it.
omg i absolutely loved viggo mortensens performance it was jaw-dropping he really made me believe that he was russian..loved it..also getting to know details about the russian mob is interesting.
Great film. Very strong storyline, good cast with an excellent performance from Viggo Mortensen. Naomi Watts was also very good. I hadn't ever seen David Cronenberg make a film of this genre before, and I must say he did a wonderful job. An above average mob film, in my opinion. 4.5/5 rating.
Not fast paced enough to call it a thriller but it had it's moments.
Pretty decent story but nothing too original.
Good acting though and quite an enjoyable watch.

That's a pretty apt alternate title for this movie.
I enjoyed it a lot. It dark, intense, gritty and unforgiving.
No wonder, it's a David Cronenberg movie.
Not your typical Hollywood gangster movie (Cronenberg is Canadian!).

Eastern promises is a very good movie, deep and involving without a dull or boring moment and again Viggo Mortensen was excellent with a great supporting cast. A very underated "gangster" movie. 4/5
I wanted to see this movie for a long time. I finally saw it. No wander why Viggo was nominated for oscar in best actor from this movie. Great story. It shows the dark side of Russian mafia. 10/10

And for the girls, if you like viggo, then this is the film for you. You see ALL of him. Viggo Mortenson fighting naked, what could be better?!!
This movie was dry and small budget. I think there should have been more surrounding the diary and the baby. Need further action going on from the Russian mafia. The weakling son acted way over the top and not likely to be of a powerful family. The cast was pretty good so I expected more from this film since all things I heard from people. Some of the scenes that demanded a tense approach were irritatingly comfortable. I guess flicks with a rape scene constitute a great movie. (Oh and to walk in a hospital and just walk out with a baby is retarded scripting in my opinion) The Russian accent could have been better. I know Russians and they have a peculiar way of speaking that is firm and undulating not as fluid as in this film.
3/5 for being tolerable (b/c of the Cast) the story was decent but don’t expect to be taken away or even to dwell on any edgy moments.
megavideo always stops after 70 minutes so dont bother with it. Cant work out how to bypass their limit..if I work offline just stops anyway a little later

Very good story line, excellent acting and portrayal of a true mob. Russian is one of the hardest languages to learn/speak, and the cast nailed it! Well worth the time to watch!! 4.5/5
I have to say that this movie was very different from what I was expecting to watch,the actor's are very good with their story that they want to you go away with, it was alittle bit slow at first than it got to the point of the movie. 8/10
