Very entertaining. Excellent story about a crime that goes spiralling out of control. Perfect setting and well acted by all members of the cast. Nice touch of black humour also. 4.5/5 rating.
Fargo is a masterpiece of film making. As so often with the Coens a tale of the unforseen consequences of an everyday person's greed (think No Country For Old Men, Burn After Reading) with an intricate plot and a lot of pitch black humour.
This is a very good film from the Coen brothers', although I found "No Country For Old Men" to be an even more satisfying film. I look at "Fargo", "The Big Lebowski", and "No Country For Old Men" as being the Coen's three best movies. I hope there is more from them in the future that can rival these three; though prior offerings such as "Intolerable Cruelty" and "The Ladykillers", could be proving their peak creativity is dwindling, but "No Country For Old Men" did save them. "Fargo" is amazing. IMDb's ratings bear this out - 8.2 for "Fargo", 8.2 for "Lebowski", and 8.4 for "No Country For Old Men". For sheer entertainment, "Lebowski" or should I call it, "The Dude" wins handsdown, but "Fargo" has all the elements of a true classic. Beyond a doubt, I have never seen such a dramatically-obvious portrayal of good vs. evil, and never, ever, have I seen such gut-wrenching violence. Oh, the violence, beautifully believable, in it's grotesque way. This movie is proof that artistic freedom to portray such violence should never be denied.
[SPOILER]
Steve Buscemi's bullet-grazed face becomes almost as painful for the watcher as it is for his character; Steve Buscemi's leg in the wood chipper is as horrific a scene as you are ever going to see. Enough to give Marge Gunderson morning sickness all over again.
And the good vs evil thing: so obvious in the contrasts between Marge (the good), Buscemi and Stormare (the evil), and poor Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) squeamishly caught in a trap in-between. I could only handle the violence because of Marge. She is the rock of normality, who continues trumpeting the virtuous life, when all hell is breaking loose around her. She knows all-to-well that "you know what" happens, but always knows "you know what" can be flushed down the toilet. Frances McDormand, as Marge, deserves every acting award she ever got for this role. Marge, to me, is the most perfect cop I've ever encountered. She is polite, non-judgemental, yet able to ask the tough questions that gets her the information she needs. You can see how thoroughly she sizes up those she interviews: watching every nuance of their body language, and hearing ever inflection of their speech. Now here's a woman who can spot a lie when others can't. Unlike so many cops in movies, she doesn't have to beat information out of someone; she can charm it out of them, all the while appealing to their moral responsibility, no matter how immoral they may be.
[SPOILER]
This is so well-shown in scenes such as talking to the two young hookers in the bar, and putting Jerry on the hotseat in the car dealership interrogations. I felt so sorry for Jean Lundegaard; she was the true victim in this - the most innocent, yet the one who suffered the most. I guess a case could also be made that her son, Scotty, suffered equally, but most of what he went through was not presented on camera. Maybe he would suffer the most, for he had to live afterward. Even Marge would suffer from this catastrophe, but you know her suffering will be tempered by an unwavering belief that good triumphs over evil. As the last scene shows (Marge getting into bed with her husband): despite the horrors that might go on around us, we must seek solace in the everyday beauty of the things that are nearest and dearest to us all. And this message is conveyed to us all by the Coen brothers without any allusions to religion whatsoever. But I'm getting into a personal bias of my own here - if you take solace in religion playing a part in morality, so be it.
There was one genre tag missing from this film and that was comedy. There are some really funny bits in it and it really has the feel of a dark comedy. The cast was amazing, and the story is genius. Alot of action, i never felt bored whilst watching this. This is going to be one of my new favourite films. 5/5
Yeah well the acting Is OK Yeah , It's overwhelming to imagine this as a true story , worth a watch but the " YEAH'S " are a little hard to take at times , even as a Canadian !
this movie is great, i give it an b+. Because its not the easiest movie to follow, but its acting is superb and the jokes and phrases are really out there and funny. Definitly worth the watch. watch for the funny accents!!
i was watching it through megavideo and befor it finished it said to pay for unlimited time in watching that so sucked but what i seen of it was ok didnt know i had to pay to see the full movie
I had to watch this movie because people always stop me and ask if I am from the midwest. They say I speak just like the people in this movie. I loved hearing them all talk, DONT CHA KNOW. HMM?
I'm a fan of Coens but this is undoubtedly the worst film they've done. It's all done nicely and profesionally as usual but I'm simply not having this.. Soaked with unnecessary hyperviolence this movie is pointless; this is not a true story either. On the contrast with all the other junk around, this is quite good but on its own or, even more, compared to other Coen works, this movie is pure junk. Acting is simply great, but the movie is disturbing (pointlessly!) and hard to watch. The plot is simple but evolves into something a little bigger than you could initally expect, but I'm not buying a story about one disturbed simpleton and two other morons- the thugs. Emotions in the movie is replaced by robotic-like operation, everyone is portrayed heartless and sulky and the events are little bit more than unreal. I hated, hated this movie. Of course, it's much more than the usual action type garbage bin deal, as I said- it's done profesionally by two masterminds. But it's nothing much more than that either. Oh, and the faked accent kind of gets on the nerves. "Oh ya betcha" ....bleurghhh..
are you schitzophrenic, you seem to be changing your mind a lot. it was a very good film, the directing was nigh on brilliant, the setting is purposfully bleak and the hyperviolence was perfect against a backdrop of banality. the acting was top notch too, steve buscemi plays odd types brilliantly. lol. this was a funny and at times warming film. i reccomend anyone to watch this.
idk why i waited so long to watch this too, i had many people tell me it was good and that it was my type of movie and i ended up really liking it. margie and norm are like teh cutest couple ever.
this movie was super. I can't believe it too me this long to actually see this, what a gem. i love the cast and its not wonder why it won so many awards movies should all be made from this movie's standards.
I love this movie!! The acting is just fantastic and it's the perfect mixture of drama and comedy. The Cohen brothers have a unique movie making style that almost never fails to entertain. If you've never seen this movie, I beg you to watch it now and enjoy.
This movie is really entertaining, it's grabs you and doesn't let go. The cop in the film, Marge, is so not the typical cop, and I think that that's what did it for me.
