I am glad the makers of this film dident go ''over the top'' as they did with advent children. The great thing about final fantasy games (and the same should go for their movie counterparts) is that it keeps realism within a fantasy world, so you can relate to it. The idea of being thrown miles into the air while deuling, is a really far fetched thing which dosent occur in final fantas games, so it shouldent in movies, and im glad to say, it wasent like that in this movie (but it was in advent children).
So all in all, this film was amazing and did not let down the game (although this story is not taken from the video game stories) it still manages to catch the final fantasy feel to it and it defiantly outdone advent children (another final fantasy movie set in another fantasy world).
I wish they make a final fantasy 8 movie!!
Right but the difference between this movie and AC was this movie had absolutely nothing to do with FF and was just gave a label to help it sell and this film was terrible. Why name it such when it has absolutely nothing to do with the franchise. Just to make money and throw some graphics around, really wasn't that hard to be honest. There was no emotion to this film and little character development and long periods of sheer boredom. Nobody at the cinema enjoyed it to top off. AC had the much more recognisable characters, better storyline and action and completely fitted in with the FF games. Getting thrown into the air actually happened a lot in the games so you clearly were playing something else, especially during cut scenes in the games. So i don't know where you made that realism rubbish up as the game was actually more unreal than AC was but despite this the word fantasy comes to mind "not real". As for this film 2/5 at best coming from a lifelong FF fan.
i disagree with dougie, final fantasy has been a multitude of stories , not just one. Every time i play a ff game, its story.. Technologies timeline..and a few other things are way different then the last. none of them feel or play exactly like the last. besides the typical turn based game play that is.
I just do not understand why so many loves Avatar so much, but chose to turn their backs on this awesome movie, because all of the characters were CGI?
this movie is great, but so is avatar. No big deal really, i think it had more to do with the story perhaps and that alot of final fantasy Don't live up to the games.
Not as good as advent children (cant beat cloud) but deffinatly amazing, i remember whenthis film come out on dvd and i got it the day it was released the graphics were truely imense, brilliant story line, brilliant graphics, and hopefuly 1 of many FF films to come. 10/10
it's not Final Fantasy.. But it has the same feel if you know what I mean.. Something you would expect Square to do.
The CGI was, just brilliant, and the voice acting is the best i've seen! The characters fit the voices perfectly!

I think the relationship between Grey and Aki was stupid, it was never developed, but then again that might just be me lol
i would prefer if it had its previous rating which was over 9 cuz this movie deserves it. a predictable story line but still a good one and the animations was AWESOME and good action and everything that goes with it was awesome as well. the final fantasy game fans might have been disappointed because this had nothing to do with the game but for those who aren't FF game fans this movie is definitely worth a watch.
If you're expecting it to be a movie that fits in with the games then it'll be a let down. It really has nothing to do with final fantasy at all.
However, as a film in its own right this is a good watch, the graphics were brilliant at the time they came out and story line was entertaining. You just have to pull away from what you know about final fantasy and watch it for what it is.
I thought it was very good movie. The CGI animation was great and the plot was also very good. The depiction of futuristic technologies was well put out and the graphics of the animation were appealing. I only had one problem which was the last 15 minutes didn't load, but that was probably my fault anyway. Good thing I've seen it before! Again, very good movie. 5/5.
i watched this movie when it first came out and then got the DVD for it great movie with cgi i still remember the headlines about companies wanted to hire the female in teh movie for adverts etc.. as they didnt notice she wasnt really made me laugh. I have to say i dont have a fav when it comes to this and advent childeren i likve both of them based on there own merits and storey line.
As Beautiful put it, the CG animation was remarkable, and let's not forget it was made in 2001. I had no idea what the story was going to be about, i only wondered into this movie by curiosity without knowing what it was, i'd only briefly seen a picture of it in a cartoon magazine several years back. I was agreeably surprised by the story (i'm a sucker for Asimov). The storyline was perfect, entertaining AND intelligently plotted, despite the dialogue that at times easily fell prey to cliché. Only Alec Baldwin's voicing was pitiful as Captain Gray and had made me roll my eyes and smile because of the cheesy quality, the others gave decent performances. The idea of the phantoms seizing human souls by way of tentacles is an original and praiseworthy concept i greatly admire. Since it was more of an action and plotting dependant movie, the emotions weren't greatly explored

. Some would reproach it to be confusing and accuse it for lack of plot, i say just go with the flow and assume there's an explanation for the little things so you don't get tangled up in total confusion during the film. Pretty good if you like sci-fi action and a complex plot. 4/5.
