After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.
No doubt this is a well made movie that glorifies the philosophy of Thoreau and, at least an attempt at, the self-suffiiciency of Robinson Crusoe, but I felt I wished to see no more after 25 mins or so. We are told that the hero has had an abusive childhood, but the only thing wrong with his parents seems to be that they are not ideally suited to one another (which is usually the case), and even that is just hearsay. Is a child-parent relationship supposed to be one-way, with kindness. care, and concern for the future of their offspring on the part of the parents, repaid with gross ingratitude, incredible wastefulness, and abandonment of them on the part of the child. How cruel of them to want to buy him a new car and pay towards his law studies! Are they not also due some loyalty and consideration? So he hits the road like a 60's hippy, risking his life clumsily and wantonly, slaughtering poor creatures who have a hard time surviving anyway, and exploiting the generosity of all he meets. Hadn't he ever heard of the Peace Corps or its contemporary equivalent? Taking a sabbatical year off, he could have roughed it with them and done a bit of good for suffering Third World inhabitants at the same time.

Wow, sorry you missed THE TOTAL POINT of the movie! It sounds like your own bitterness guided your judgement of the movie, and you missed the true beauty behind it: "modern society" lives with blinders on to the TRUE BEAUTIES of life. So many of us sharply maintain our focus on success, financial strength and careers, that we never stop to see the beautiful world that we rush past to get to work.
I too keep a backpack ready to hit the woods from time to time, NOT to run from my problems, but to EMBRACE the beautiful world that amazes me at every turn, and breathe a deep breath that seems to magically melt my worries and stress away.
Exploiting generosity..Ha! crafty words from a bitter heart.
This conversation is the epitome of what is going on in our society today. We have the older generation nourishing the souls of the younger generation with the guilt that stained their empty dreams. But in fairness to them, they didnt have the priviledge to let everything go for a 'selfish' journey in finding oneself and inner fulfilment. I cant blame them for not understanding the point of this movie.
I'm with you, enricolosporco, very well said. And we're not "bitter," either. It's the main character of the story here who's bitter, man, talk about having a chip on your shoulder. He was GUTLESS (should have had it out with his old man and got it off his chest), paranoid, narcissistic and could not have lasted nearly as long as he did had not the few people he'd let in for10 minutes helped him out. He reminds me of that clown who thought he could live with the bears out in the wild who ended up getting half-eaten by them, the dope. Hey, everybody loves to run away once in awhile, but you DO NOT cause the people who love you to suffer, you get word to them you're okay. Like the old guy told him, you FORGIVE. And you don't cop out and die first, then leave a note.
. . . a lot of comments try to demonstrate that the main character is a spoilt, ungrateful brat, or not. This is pointless.
Thing is, this story is fascinating, ambiguous (desire to get lost / very strong human relationships), very well told. And this character also is.
This movie raises questions, and this is what cinema is all about, isn't it?
Something the book says, and the film doesn't,
[SPOILER]
is that there WAS a safe way to cross the river, a couple of miles away, that Chris never knew of because he didn't want to take a map. So he could have got out of it safe easily.
Just be aware that the movie, although beautiful, is tough.
..agreed, as well as being able to have a great philosophical conversation with my 26 yr old son. Memories in the making. Deep thinking, happiness, sadness, smiles, tears, the what ifs and what was, and the what could have been. All something to think about, ponder and apply to our own lives.
This is my second time seeing this movie..the fist time I'd seen it was when it had first come out on DVD..I am so glad that I have watched it again here..this movie is truly inspiring, moving, and brilliantly done. A MUST SEE!
9/10
"happiness..only real when shared"..the movie was great..the book was better..the philosophies discussed become evident when the ending occurs..I will leave it at that..I won't spoil the ending, but one of the better ones you will see in any movie..sad, but real..
A nice, if thats the word, film. Reminded me of a modern version of Robert Redfords "Jeremiah Johnson" . ps if you like this film, look up a book called "zen and the art of motorcycle maintainence"
Very very overrated. What a poor boy. No matter how far he ran from his family, he could not run from his own anger. He could not run from himself. and that led him to worse. Tragic.
And, happiness can also be very real, when not shared.
Some people waste their whole lives in their careers and pursuit of success and NEVER find true happiness. I'd say He LIVED MORE in two years that most people live their whole lives. -Nothing tragic about that.
Right lol - I had been avoiding this movie for various reasons, but yesterday evening it caught up with me when my brother came round and lent me a stack of DVDs.
One of the major reasons I've been assiduously avoiding this movie is because I had a very similar, though far more successful experience of urban slumming and wilderness living that lasted from the age of 15 until the age of 30. I tend to avoid homelessness / road trip flicks because they invariably don't do justice to the reality of the experience.
However, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the acting and the production were uniformly of a very high standard throughout, and that they managed to avoid some of the potential pit falls like making the guy out to be a saint
[SPOILER]
when ultimately his death is pretty much a Darwin Award situation
.
Basically, if you haven't seen this flick yet? Give it a try. Even if it doesn't make it into your top ten of all time you probably won't regret the couple of hours you wasted on some breathtaking scenery and this heartwarming true story.
Very good movie,
for me this film shows another indivduals perspective on what life is and look onto your own and question wether you are living yours to the full.
4/5
I can't believe it took me two years to come across such an amazing film.
It opens your eyes to things you only dream of.
[SPOILER]
What the film doesn't tell you is on the dashboard of the ride that dropped him off before the 'magic bus' he left his map
which could of saved his life as there was a hand-operated tram that crossed the river 1/4 of a mile away from where he fell in.
He could of crossed back over.
He has done so much adventurous achievements we couldn't possibly do in a life time without the courage. He truly lived.
I completely agree. Chris McCandless is legendary. His journey makes all of mine put together pale in comparison. This is a must watch film & I'm so glad that I stumbled upon it. Can't believe that it didn't win oodles of awards.
Do I have the reason to choose a path like him?YES.Do I have the courage?NO.I am so glad that I read these comments here,or I would have never come across this movie.
For those of you who have not yet seen "Taking Chance", you wont understand this post. I felt myself being as emotionally moved and challenged as a person watching this film as I did with T.C. Which, in my opinion, is one of the top 3 movies of all time, for screen play and raw emotion. I am a hiker, mostly on the A.T., and this movie made me long for that kind of courage and freedom. 5/5 for sure.
I would like to say I am somewhat a movie critic. Alot of the movies I review I agree with other critics. And I tell you in all my years of watching movies. I have NEVER come across a film so inspiring and uplifting as this one. It is a terrible, terrible shame Emile Hirsch didn't get an award for playing Chris McCandless or even a nomination. Emile Hirsch was robbed of a Oscar. This is the best film of 2007. 4 out of 4 stars.
Wow, this movie was amazing. This kid took an incredible journey and I had fun and learned a lot by watching this movie.. I will watch this again sometime in the near future.. Emile Hirsch did a great job, everybody in this movie was excellent. This movie boasts a tremendous cast of Emile Hirsch, Jena Malone, William Hurt, Marcia Gay Harden, Vince Vaugh, Kristen Stewart, Hal Holbrook. This is truely a great movie.. The end is sad
[SPOILER]
Him accidently eating poison and starving to death
but, it would not have been as good.. It also had some rockin tunes.. 9/10..
im watching it on demand on my tv. barely 5 minutes in but i already like it. seems adventureous. plus i love the guy whos playing the main character. i cant remember his name :[
A must see! 10/10! Emile was fantastic! The soundtrack was great! Kudos to Sean Penn for portraying his life as brilliantly as he did!
This story reminds me of my dear lost brother.
Rest in Peace Christopher Johnson McCandless! Thank you for being such a phenomenal person while you were on this earth! You truly lived life without boundaries!
(RIP Clinton Douglas Covault! Your life on the road touched so many just like Mr. Alexander Supertramp. You will never be forgotten!)
