This was a pretty good movie. I gave it a 4/5 for original story. have not really seen this one done before. I enjoyed it for the most part.. lots of blood and gore but the story is pretty intense. it's in french with English subs. not for kids..may cause disturbing nightmares. nudity warning.
This movie was wild!! The torture was very long and drawn out in the second half of the movie. Other than that. Movie was worth the watch at least once especially if you like torture, blood, and gore. 3.5 out of 5 stars for me and that is because can someone tell me what the h** the ending was doing?
Well, that whole group wanted to create a martyr, who is a person that has been tortured so much to the point that they are able to see life beyond death. Anya became a martyr and told the head lady what she saw. Obviously the lady liked what she heard so she killed herself in order to get to the next life.
I may be wrong about some of that but thats what i got from the movie.

This is my favorite horror/thriller to date. The French are on top of the horror genre nowadays. Too bad all America does is remake and butcher all the old classics. They are already planning to remake this and Let The Right One In. I think both remakes are sins.
Not bad at all. Everyone is talking about how disturbing this movie is but honestly i really didnt find it disturbing at all. Theres much much more gory and disturbing films out there. However, the movie still had an excellent story and was defientley worth watching. 8/10
I didn't know what to expect from this film..i have seen very few good f horror/thriller films lately..but this is by far one of the best I have watched lately..it kept you wondering what was going on..and then it smacks you in the face again..I found it an interesting take on the subject..if I can find it on dvd i will add it to my collection..4/5..for the movie..4/5 for the graphic/ gore of the film..I was shocked at how far they went and continued ont he path..
I had already seen this after watching again tonight.i had forgotten this movie and boy did it ever come flying back.utterly horrible the things that happened.Very distrubing and evil.the story is very well done and it brings intense emotion..Major tortue so be warned..not for weak of heart..

shoots themself after find out whats on the other side. That means that all those innocent women died and went crazy for nothing. It was all in vain.
My niece had to watch this crap and I was the idiot who sat down with her. Never again will I waste my time. It made me sick to my stomach watching this. I still dont get it. Im lost for words literally. Shame on all of you who liked this film. TSK TSK TSK. I take that back..to each its own. Im just mad.

absolutely excellent, the gore was a bit shocking but the movie was over all very well made. despite the quality of the movie and how well made it was. People still gave it a bad score simply because they cant stomach the story that well. be strong peoples XD 5/5
For me the whole film was a little bit too much theres just too much gore and blood and it all led up to an ending which in my opinion was ridiculous. If you like torture and blood this is for you for me this is a 8/10.
I don't know, because there ain't that much more "gore" in this movie than there is in any other horror movie out there. But from the comments, reviews and the hype, i was anticipating the most horrific, gorest, bone breaking, tooth removing, toenails relieved from their toes movie of all time!!

I did'nt feel disturbed, sick or any of that, i just felt sorrow and sympathy for anna who did'nt deserve any of that and who was just trying do right by her friend. 3.6/5
although the second half was hard to watch i thought it was a great movie.
the two lead actresses were very convincing. i liked the end what she says

Man the French can make great horror flicks, dark, bloody, gory, sick and twisted! This flick was awesome, great storyline and the ending was fantastic too. Two thumbs up..10/10 stars..nuff said..Peace Out.
Like you're going to believe anything an insane person who has been tortured tells you, seriously. She probably said the only way to get into heaven is kill yourself, and the gullable .. did it! Put it this way, this aint no disney flick

anyways besides that it's worth a watch..I expected better though but I must say I'm into these sick movies..makes me think in disgust at how any human being could do something like that..sick sick sick.
It wasnt so that they could communicate with the dead. Supposedly, a true martyr "sees" (witnesses) whats on the other side of death. These people wanted to make a martyr so that they might learn whats on the other side and the only way to create a martyr is through incredible torture and pain so that the mind disassociates itself from the pain of the body.

I've read some of these comments and I just don't get it. This movie is not insightful or thought provoking. It is just a sick and twisted movie. It's like the writer and producer got together and wanted to make a movie about sadistic torture and wrote some kind of lame ** story to be able to put into a movie. If you like a sick and twisted movie that has no rhyme or reason, then this is a movie for you.
Well, Its not a movie that just tosses out the plot to you, Ill give you that. The concept can be broken down to this..

A group of people who believe that martyrs are not solely associated with a religion. They also believe that is occurs only when the mind has disassociated completely from the pain of the body. They attempt to make "true" martyrs through torture ans pain so they might learn whats on the other side of death. Supposedly, a martyr "sees" (witnesses) the afterlife just before he/she dies.

This move is quite messed up isn't it? Pretty disturbing, quite a bit of gore, and a pretty good story. I liked it, but I don't think I'll watch again. Worth a watch, but be warned the material may traumatize you.
From reading several of the comments posted, it appears that not a lot of people could get the concept of the movie.
This is probably one of the most graphic ones I've seen in a while.
Most of the movie is rather believable which is probably why most people found it hard to watch.
It wasn't that bad of a movie really.
I actually found it to be a pretty decent movie.
This movie is almost too complex to understand at all.. but in its complexity it is strangely beautiful. It is not good or bad. It just "is", like abstract art. Some will like it, and some will decide that it is simply a mess of nonsensical crap. I saw it as art.. so you will have to judge for yourself.
The etimology of martyr was given at the end of the movie. It is from the greek word meaning "witness." This is remarkably similar to the Buddhist concept of the ego after egolessness is attained (which is duel to the concept of non-attachment in Buddhism and "letting go" in the movie); what remains is the observing self. V for Vendetta has some similar themes.
Ultimately the Buddhist ecstasy they spoke of is probably related to the body's ability to produce its own endorphins under certain circumstances..
These themes could have been developed much more in the movie however. Over-all, the movie was heavy on sadomasochistic sensationalism and gore and light on plot, dialoge, philosophy, character development, etc.
One of the actresses had the creepiest sociopathic eyes I've ever seen though.
This was a very hard film to watch due to the nature of the story, there is alot of gore. However that takes nothing away from the film the gore is a necessity to tell the story. I was blown away by this film, its a masterpiece. Hats off to the director and actors for making such a challenging film. 5/5
A different & fascinating Movie. The realistic & graphic violence/torture might upset some viewers; in fact I think many people will find this disturbing. Very unusualy dark movie for this site,not for family viewing. 8/10.
