A near flawless western. Costner in one of his best roles, and Robert Duvall is simply perfect in this film. If you didn't get to see this in the theater, you've missed out on something. The sweeping landscapes are breath taking on the big screen. The story is classic good vs bad in the west. Well developed screen play, great acting all in all a tremendous good time. A must see for any lover of the western movies. 5/5
I completely agree.. This is one of Costner's best roles and toughest and Duvall as always is excellent.. If you love Western's then you need to see this.. 5/5..
I believe this to be a western that even those who don't care for the genre would consider great. Annette Bening's character was so sweet and kind and so much the kind of woman one would wish to marry that only in the last few moments did I identify her with the sharp-tongued adulterous shrew of "American Dream". (10/10)
I never agreed with the Costner critics, those who deemed Dances wimpish, this role vindicates as a tough nosed cattleman who finds his heart, hid away for 10 years. Critics silenced, I will venture any directorial he pursues. Duvall is always top hat, and as others have noted, screenplay excellent.
Easily one of the best westerns made of late, Kevin Costner, Robert Duval and the big big american west, can't miss !! This one leaps out of your screen.
Boss Spearman, Charley Waite, Mose Harrison and Button freegraze their cattle across the vast prairies of the West, sharing a friendship forged by a steadfast code of honor and living a life unencumbered by civilization. When their wayward herd forces them near the small town of Harmonville, the cowboys encounter a corrupt sheriff and kingpin rancher who govern the territory through fear, tyranny and violence. Boss and Charley find themselves inextricably drawn towards an inevitable showdown, as they are forced to defend the freedom and values of a lifestyle that is all too quickly vanishing. Amidst the turmoil, life suddenly takes an unexpected turn for the loner Charley when he meets the beautiful and warm spirited Sue Barlow, a woman who embraces both his heart and his soul.
I saw this feature when it first came out, and since then it has made its way to basic cable channels, and each time it comes on I watch. Kevin Costner really knows how to make a film, full of layered characters, good story control and direction. It is one of the better 'westerns' of the last 40 years, not better than 'Unforgiven' and 'Tombstone' in my opinion, but very good.
Bravo to this movie,I thoroughly enjoyed this when I 1st viewed & have now added it to my collection - well worth the watch, no matter what your preference of genre is :D
If you like scripts plum full of hyperbole and Cliche Rhetorically figured speech..well this is the movie for you. The two western Charactures hold up the battle between good and bad quite nicely..
An enjoyable movie for western lovers.
Costner and Duvall, great casting. Fine performances.
Some parts are a little cliche but endearing at the same time.
The movie follows a tried and true formula.
It brings back fond memories of the ole westerns I use to enjoy as a youngster.
The cinematography is phenomenal. The acting ,directing, scripting are all A-classed. I cannot find any fault with this movie whatsoever. This is a classic for the Western lovers and needs to be in every home movie collection. A masterpiece.
