This movie won two awards - one in Cannes and the Sprits - so I guess it should've been better than that. The directing and narration is superb, cause it goes backwards. The actors are very authentic too. The message is very clear: It's basically about any kind of crime u do when ur a teenager. I liked the idea, cause it can happen to anyone. The other questions that remain unanswered don't matter too much, cause it is about the youth emotions. I personally didn't care about the end. Whilst the movie is not much of one to remember, it is still good, the end is pretty symbolic!
Thought, would give this movie a chance. Not a bad choice after all, but there's nothing that would make me remember it as something particularly good.
Okay, the story, written on paper as it is, sounds pretty impressive. Hollywood megamans would have made it a sobbing, tragic drama and if this was a Hollywood movie I wouldn't even look at it, because Hollywood has big money and big projects but closed eyes and they stamp their outlook on everything they work with. This is kind of an independent film so it's definitely much better, more interesting and more enjoyable interpretation.
After a nauseous (literally) beginning (all this weird, pointless french gabble and shaky camera while some random dude is skating a bowl or walking to the shore), I was impressed that this movie wasn't gonna be the typical pointless horror story that Hollywood would have made out of it. I immediately knew that the story is gonna be told in a more humanly way and wasn't gonna be pointlessly graphic. BUT.. the content. While maintaining the main point- a teenage boy accidentally killing a guard, this movie is basically just dragging us along some random events in one dudes life; okay I know this was the point- the life before and after the accident, but it's not even expressive- it's some random footage about teenagers hanging around, having sex, hanging around, skating, hanging around, driving, sleeping, thinking, hell-doing-whatever-they-do, and the result is- the whole accident which is the main thing of this film gets thrown back into the corner and I even forgot about it at one point. So in short- the whole point of this movie (accident) is just a background. No one shows if things really changed or not, how, did they find out, hell, they should have provided us with some more dialogues.. Plus it's all shown in a messy way, so messy, that many times I just can't follow anymore and gotta rewind back and think what the hell is this scene got to do with the one before, and why is it repeated..
One thing I immediately liked was the main actor- Gabe Nevins. don't listen to people who say he isn't trained as an actor and lacks expressiveness and Hollywood-like performance, he's really good. I mean, really- there are loads of useless "trained" actors messing around the Hollywood Boulevard and having the spotlight while in real films they're complete garbage. What did you wanna see from Nevins? Some crazy walking-talking, whatever? He has the attitude of that teen, he clearly shows emotions, man, he's got talent and good future, I can tell.
This film also featured some pretty awesome skating footage, nothing much, pretty much out of place all the time, but still- you can enjoy it as it is. I especially liked the tube surfing (well, skating) scene, that was a good one, it kinda like brought me in there.
So, this movie is not that bad after all. But it COULD have been made better. Also, the soundtrack- in these indie films the people think they can throw in whatever "interesting" garbage they can find (perfect example- the terrible Juno), and it's not always necessarily good and relevant.
This movie was good. The main character was in a teen vogue spread. That must have been really cool for him. He is just a lucky kid. Trying out as skate border in the background and then ending up getting the main role in all. 8/10
It started off good. Good storyline, acting, sound track, atmosphere etc. Then when you think you're going to get a conclusion to the story, it ends.
Well if you want to fall asleep to a movie then I recommend this one for you.
2.5/5
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. I WAS WANTING THE ENDING TO HURRY UP AND COME AND WHEN IT DID IT SUCKED. THIS PATHETIC CRAP NEEDED ABOUT ANOTHER TWENTY MINUTES OF AN APPROPRIATE ENDING.
you have to look above the not so great acting. And see the point of the story and enjoy it. This movie isn't for the big hollywood type people that need action and big budget films. This movie is a really good movie if you look above that and just listen and watch. And see the point of this movie. 3 outa 5.
I don't see why everyone's dissing it so much, though I admit it was pretty boring. I liked the portrayal of teenagers and how the dialogue was realistic. I think I would have enjoyed the whole movie more if it had a better ending, though. The end was like, "And that's all." It was like the whole movie was leading up to nothing.
Bleh, it wasn't that good. I liked the "murder" scene.
[SPOILER]
I'm not really into Gus Van Sant's movies. I think that he takes things too slow. It had a good story line. I totally get it, but I think it was a bit slow for my taste.
A teenage boy experiences a tragic, gruesome accident. He is alone in reconciling his horror, guilt and fear and possesses both an innocence and wisdom. The film is sensitive, beautiful and artistic, with cinéma vérité honesty and spatterings of Hitchcockian flavor. Its sound: haunting, with touches reminiscent of Nino Rota’s compositions for Fellini. I’ve added this to my list of favorite movies.
I really tried to like this movie more than I actually did. I love Elephant but this movie.. not even close. I didn't hate it, but I was disappointed. I understand his whole not wanting to hiring real actors to capture realness but sometimes the acting took me straight out of the movie. 2/5 :[[
a beautifully shot sobering tale of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. subtle and scary, this is an unflinching story of protecting youself and those around you. While not the most morally correct film it is true to its characters and message. gus van zant hits the mark and solidifies himself as one of the premier indie filmmakers of our time. this movie tackles so many different issues and brings us into a world not many movie makers would have the guts to go. this is epic storytelling in a tiny package. wonderful!!
Watched this movie for about 10 min. The trailers for the movie is better. Don't bother unless you at the least have seen all other movies on this site.
art or an ambiguous mess? i would like to comment but missed 15 minutes of the middle; other than that it seemed more of a mess than art, perhaps that 15 minutes had the definative answer?
