Bill Maher interviews some of religion's oddest adherents. Muslims, Jews and Christians of many kinds pass before his jaundiced eye. Maher goes to a Creationist Museum in Kentucky, which shows that dinosaurs and people lived at the same time 5000 years ago. He talks to truckers at a Truckers' Chapel. (Sign outside: "Jesus love you.") He goes to a theme park called Holy Land in Florida. He speaks to a rabbi in league...
I saw this documentary the first week it came out. And I clearly got the point Bill was trying so hard to make, which many people are not seeing.
Maybe this will help: (also being a documentary, there are no spoilers)
Maher ends his film with a call to action. With the hatreds unleashed by religious fervor threatening the future of humanity, Maher argues that “Rational people, anti-religionists, must end their timidity and come out of the closet and assert themselves .. Religion must die for mankind to live.”
Jeez, that Maher is hilarious and just as others have surmised ways to benefit from the fabric, the unseen filament that holds this "ball" together so did Bill; The 'doc' indeed is funny but so to are the reasons "why" one denies a Higher Power. I've seen the long winding comments and thought, {?I'd never tarry on as such.} Well. Religion is liken to a pearl that has been removed from its place of origin, bored and worn loosely for all to see.. Dymonz~
i tried to keep an open mind while watching the documentary but i lost my cool towards the end because it was soo obvious that he was mis-using some of his facts about religion and editing shots to paint a negative image of religions in general and i found that incredibly frustrating because it lost its meaning as a documentary that is reflecting truth, it used the negative highlights os islam, juddism, christianity and forgot all about the good stuff. i guess this documentray can be very offensive to people who are religious to some extent.
Be a bit more cynical. Faith, is a beautiful thing, but where that faith lies is sometimes a greater misfortune than we would realize. Bill Maher brings a taunting view to organized religions that we all recognize; There may be a God, he does not refute that, but a God of which has been thought of through religious ideals is something more controversial than many would like to have brought up. An excellent watch for those who has no strong stance on religion, a wedge for the eyelids for those who are. Like it or not, it's a movie that most should watch. If not, why are you considering to read a review on this movie?
Dont Be To Quick To Say This Documentary Is Manipulative
The conclusion of this documentary, and the final answer is - I DO NOT KNOW, which means it's calling out to people to open their minds and think, not be exclusive and hold on to just one answer. whatever created us, ''it'' has blessed us with our BRAINS, so I believe they have a purpose. Use yours. Think. Question. Doubt. Investigate. I think I'll rather believe a man who admits he doesn't have an answer to something than the man who claims to have answers to everything. My religion is - I DO NOT KNOW, too!
Words cannot describe how accurate this documentary is. It is amazing to see people's reactions when their faith is questioned - how their minds are closed shut.
Those who do not follow religion - the atheists are really the only people that can think with a biblically unbiased mind. Although our thoughts and decisions are influenced and fueled by our own socio, economic, communal and historically factual contexts: those who are propelled by religion only have more opinion which bring fluctuation to their choices.
This documentary has given me new content and understanding for my essays in English and Studies of Religion.
I consider myself to be an atheist, I don't follow any God or higher power yet I attend a Catholic school.. figure that.
I have to disagree. Mocumentaries are neither accurate or (in this films case) biblically unbiased. You can't go around toting as a documentary and then undercut, voice over and openly mock every counter argument. Sory Bill Maher fans, Michael Moore already proved that fact..I would like to see his raw footage and watch each interview in it's appropriate context, that would be a documentary.
I do agree that Atheist's are typically well versed in the scripture and have the intellectual capacity to make their arguments compelling and complete; but to say that they themselves are unbiased is mistaken.
Atheist's (for the most part) are some of the most devoted people to their own beliefs. It is easier to be a poor (insert your own religion here) than it is to be an Atheist. Think for a second Why?? Why would you invest so much of your time intellect and energy into formulating these arguments if, you yourself weren't trying to make converts of people?

He really nailed it but I'm kinda dissapointed why he ignored a major religon - Buddhisum. I have studied all the prime religions and the only religion which makes any sens to me is Buddhism. It's more like an "advanced science" which "guides" a person to the depths of life and it's purpose. Some of the mordern scientific discovries were already discovered and addressed by lord Buddha 2,500 years ago. That just blows my mind. There is NO GOD in Buddhisum, just the teachings of a man who found the path to self-enlightment. Unfortunately pure Buddhisum is rare to find.
it's awesome how it takes the fight out of the scientific territory and gives it in to simple reasoning and laughter, there were some insanely funny moments.
i think the ending argument should've kept the same note - although it made some interesting points, i'm not sure it really was anywhere near as compelling as they would've wanted it to be.
cheers
I found this documentary funny, and just informative. I don't need to watch a documentary to know what other cultures think of others, cause I would assume we already know. This has been going on for many years, and I didn't particularly like Bill Maher. Nothing exceptionally new information right here..just mockery!
'
I'm NOT a fan of Bill Maher's, He's a bitter individual imo, in fact I don't like him,, and generally go out of my way NOT to listen to him.
I was prompted to watch this documentary out of curiosity based on its high rating.
I'm glad I did.
There are moments in this where I literally LMAO
So much so that, there are segments in this in which I immediately hit the rewind button to experience the hilarity again.
For me, I found "Religulous" both enlightening and humorous
It hasn't changed my opinion of Bill Maher,, he is still a bitter prick,, but,, he made a winner here.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
So worthy,, that I'll probably watch it a couple more times in the future.
AMEN
This documentary is fantastic.
It is extremely funny to see the 'religious' people interviewed churning out the same old tired nonsense we hear every day and being unable to answer simple questions about their so called 'faith'.
These people give us the standardized, pre-programmed answers like "if I'm wrong I loose nothing, if you're wrong you loose everything" etc etc etc
..yawn..
The truth is that the ficticious Bible does not hold up to close scrutiny and neither does the Koran or the Torah.
Religion is a disease and the sooner we get over these primitive belief systems the sooner we can progress as humans towards a truly fair, equal and peaceful world.
Following 2 or 3 thousand year old cults which have been subverted by humans for their own benefit is completely and utterly insane.
Everyone has a right to believe what they will, but only to a certain extent. As soon as it begins to affect the stability and peace of the world, then it's time to stop and take a good look at yourself.
a lot of the time religion can be good for people. whether fact or fiction. and the scriptures are a way that one can enlighten themselves. and to learn how to live a positive existence. NOTHING is wrong with that. if you don`t want to be bothered with people like that .. that is O.K. TOO.
but , to blatantly down somebody because they try to strive .. you`re the one who will end up looking like a fool. no .. i am not in a religion , myself .. i just feel there`s no reason to put , ANY KIND of KNOWLEDGE aside. even sci-fi books can teach , someone .. something. and IT`S science FICTION.
by the way the KORAN HAS ALL OF THE SCRIPTURES IN IT .. THE OLD TESTAMENT , THE TORAH , and a lot of the other prophets books that were omitted out of the bible .. for obvious reasons.
You're right, we should forget the 10 commandments and kill, steal, rape, pillage, lie .. oh wait, you did say you want to progress to a peaceful world, right? Hmm..
Nautical, right, because without a book telling us something we'll fall into a lawless world. Because without a book calling itself the word of God, we'll have no morals.
We already have laws that prohibit theft, punish murder, etc. And it's NOT based off of the Ten Commandments, it's based off of common sense.
This movie was just "ok" for me but his pretentious and arrogant attitude covered up the most simpliest answer there is about religion and faith. It simply gives hope to those that need it most, such as the dying, the elderly, the starved, and many others. Without religion, particularly christanity there are no morals. These morals create guildelines for what people are able and are not able to do. The fear of god is what keep many of you Americans in line. The problem of the matter is that you Americans think your subject to your own opinion but truthfully a lot of things are just fact. If your happy to call yourself an American then take the responsibility and act like one.
Religion = good morals = good example for others. I go to church just to hear what the pastor has to say, I'm no Christian but my morals are very well put together and that's how it's gonna stay.
Like I always will say: people created god, god did not created people. As long as there is religion there will be war, and religion and belief is just based on the interpretations that people make from those books..
About the movie: the cartoon was really funny, too bad holy land parks exist, I think it can traumatize children. And I sincerely believe that children can get mental health problems due to parents who are very extremely religious (because I've allready met some). Some funny parts in it, especially the scenes from movies.
..YEAH, I remember when hitler spoke the same way to the germans about Jewish people. -Hope the people watching this aren't suckers like the brainwashed nazis were.
Can we now call hate a religion? People seem to live their lives for it.
Considering how most religions have very little in common with what the bible actually says, it would be pretty easy to show them up and make fun of them using it if you wanted.
Bill Maher carries this of to an extent with his limited knowledge, if he had only spent more time in the research stage, he could have made the documentary a lot better.
Average documentary and nothing special, would not recommend wasting your time watching it.
Haha, I loved it. While it may be offensive those religious people, he is right in many aspects. It was a very entertaining video detailing how religion takes shape in human soul and how religion can easily corrupt and destroy.
