In London, a real-estate scam puts millions of pounds up for grabs, naturally attraction the attention of some of the city's scrappiest tough guys (Butler, Elba) its more established underworld players (Wilkinson), and others -- all of whom are looking to get rich quick.
hooray for guy ritchie! this is a great movie that i should've watched a long, long time ago. do yourself a favor if you're a ritchie fan and haven't seen this- watch it now!
can't wait til i can see his sherlock holmes!
Pretty good, quite a few funny parts, usually involving Gerard Butler. Who is an awesome actor. Really good cast and storyline. I'm looking forward to part two. 3/5
This is actually pretty good movie! The negative comments are paying too much attention to the hype that is associated (nay, synonymous) with the name Ritchie. Ignore the fact that he is a "a toffee-nosed toff with a silver spoon stickin' out of his back door" (see some of the previous comments for more colorful statements like that one)- and just watch the movie. It is well done, but not as good as Two Smoking Barrels (duh- the pre-fame attempts from ANY artist are always the best- if you didn't know that then you are probably a fan of "the horror movie sequel"). This movie does makes up for that horrible bit "Revolver" for sure.
The only complaints I have are that the story isn't as convoluted (i.e. multiple plots running concurrently with one momentous event eventually linking them all together) as some of his previous work, and the end leaves only one thing in question -
[SPOILER]
What happened with the Russian and the accountant exactly? Perhaps this is the question/cliffhanger element Ritchie likes to end movies with?
Anyway. So it is a simpler plot, and a little less haywire. But it is well done, and the characters are pretty decent. The story is actually quite nice too, but it could have used a little beef.
I'm torn. 7 or 8 out of 10. I am leaning towards 8, maybe I will watch it again to see if my feelings change any.
I think the answer to the question you ask in your spoiler is obvious. The fact the guy said 'pass me my gloves' was a bit of a giveaway.
The problem I have with Ritchie movies is that they are so unnecessarily pretentious. All that guff about what a 'Rock n Rolla' is. For me, a rock n rolla is some old git with an Elvis haircut grappling wih the reality that the music scene has moved on and left him behind. Ritchie's take on the phrase is something he has completely made up, like most of the supposed rhyming slang in all his other movies. People in his films speak like a lot of Americans think people from London speak, all gawd blimey guvna etc (I'm referring more to Lock Stock/Snatch here). Rhyming slang is occasionally used but no way as often as that, and hardly ever the whole phrase but just the start of it. No one ever says 'give me a butcher's hook (look) at that,' for example, but merely 'give me a butcher's.' His two main problems are that he desperately wants to be huge in America so panders to their romantic view of everyone in London being a ducking and diving cheeky chappy constantly spouting rhyming slang, and his other is, despite your protestations, that he is a toff and knows nothing of the environment he is writing about.
Having said all that I will concede his movies are usually, although irritating, quite entertaining with some great set pieces like in this case the hit on the Russians among others. He also somehow manages to attract a stellar cast. I'll watch anything with Mark Strong or Tom Wilkinson in it. But not Statham. Spare me Statham.
very good point about the pretension angle for sure. Ritchie uses a strong portion of his story-telling abilities weaving/incorporating these complex idioms and cultural differences into his movies. And people froth at the mouth for it.
This movie's actually 'wicked' but U do need to be patient to follow the story. It reminds me of SNATCH, cos both had a whole bunch of characters, loads of swearing, big mob family relations, although RockNRolla's actually a bit easier to understand. By easier, I meant, I still needed the English Subs on so I could figure out what they're saying!! hehe :-) bloody hell!!
Brilliant loved it over the last couple of years Gerard Butler has become one of my favourite actors, looking forward to Gamer and Law Abiding Citizen. also hope there is a 2nd rocknrolla. 8.9/10
johhny quid what a character, don't hurt me arch i'm only small.good plot like gerard butler but the part of one two was not for him the part was writed for jason statham and you can tell it in some of the line that one two says.good film like ritchie to do another film like snatch. the rocknrolla soundtrack is awsome.
this is an amazing british mob movie, u either love it or hate it, deffinetly worth a watch, loved every minuet, johhny quid is the best
5/5 great movie cant wait for the second one
this is a gangster movie but its noo goodfellas its no casino its no lock stock and no snatch ..but it is a good movie ..for me this as more of comedy than a gangster thriller ;;it has some good strs the guy out of 300 and the guy out of bronson and the guy out of dead mans shoes
this is not an epic masterpiece or anything its just an enjoyabale ganster movie ,,4/5
Man maybe I watched this one while I was way too sleepy because I didn't get a sh*t about it. I thought this film would be good and instead make me active but I was bored till I slept on my lapTop.
Maybe I shpuld watch it after I wake up.
