A young couple move into a new apartment, only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins controlling her life.
The movie is great, and made me think a lot about Satan
[SPOILER]
that he must be the ugliest fellow because when the girl was unconscious he raped her, or maybe he is more kind than the human who rape and abuse women who are in their scenes
Don't blame it on the era. There were many perfectly awesome horror movies made, long before this one. 5 out of 5 stars, for their very successful overhyping of this yawnfest. Watch "It's Alive!" instead of this. Not the 1969 one about an alien which is posted here. The 1974 one about a killer mutant baby. It's not on watch-movies-links, sorry. But the 1974 "It's Alive" is the movie you expect this one to be, but is not. Someone must've gone to see Rosemary's Baby expecting to see an evil demon child, but instead got a boring psycho drama, and decided "Screw this! I'll make the movie this one SHOULD'VE been!" Rosemary even named their movie for them, with her most exciting lines of the film: "It's alive! It's alive!" 1960's and 70's tv horror, like Ghost Story/Circle Of Fear and Nightstalker, were better than this stinker. This story would've either been rejected by those shows, or rewritten to have more actual horror in it.
haha, how ironic mary is the name of the devils son. thats quite an affair to remember rosemary...
god is a baby daddy and now the devil is a baby daddy, except the devil makes people wealthy enough to support HIS child. not let people stone him to death to get out of paying back child support payments!
i cant imagine being that naive, i dont know about you but i sure as hell am not wearing a stank necklace!! if my husband doesnt complain of that stench, it should have been an obvious 'get out of there' signal. i didnt like it, she should have jumped out the window with the child. this just goes to show ya that women will bear any famous guys child... how lame.
So much gets lost trying to translate these great horror novels to film. READ Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Jaws, Audrey Rose, The Stepford Wives. These classic books taste of the era in which they were written. The films are wonderful and so well done that they bear repeated watching, but the books are fantastic.
Classic psychological horror directed by Roman Polanski. Deliberately slow pace, yet never a dull moment; always building the tension. Mia Farrow's acting was excellent also.
Perhaps one of the most disturbing non-violent horrors; imagination works wonders.
They don't make them like this anymore..5/5 stars.
this is a very good movie, i suppose it would be more touching to women who have had children than to anyone else as it would be in some ways easier to relate. I'm getting really irritated and the handfull of mentally challenged veiwers who can't appreciate this movie for what it was in it's time and the psycological meanings behind it, and who just want jumpy scaresand gore..idiots.
Having kids has nothing to do with liking or not likeing this movie, i thought it sucked an so did my mom an she had three kids, a bad movie is just a bad movie. -10
This movie is based on the book written by Ira Levin (the same author who wrote Stepford Wives). It is a shame there is not a sequel movie as there was a sequel book "Son of Rosemary." I think the movie is wonderful. It is not a screen queen style movie of blood and gore but a simple suspense film of a woman running from her own paranoia or in fact a coven wanting her newborn [will not spoil the movie]. This movie reminds me of The Shining style of film - suspense and a surprise ending.
I watched this ages ago at a mates house and thought it was quite creepy. Wasn't the best film i've watched and did drag on abit but was ok apart from tht.
This movie doesn't exactly blow my skirt up.
Ya.. I know it is supposed to be a psychological horror movie.. and is old and what not.. but.. it could have been so much better..
[SPOILER]
They didn't even show the baby and I sat through this whole movie to just see her rocking the baby .. this is the big ending? .. lol.. um.. ya..
hmm.. it was just not scary at all for me.. the Exorcist is not that much older then this movie.. and they did so much better with that movie.. 10x more creepy/horror-ific then this one.. If your bord.. knock yourself out.. and at least next time someone asks if you have seen this movie.. you can finally say Yes, I have.. and I will never get that time I wasted back.. lol..but that is just my opinion.. take it or leave it.. If you like it.. Well then.. Cheers to you!!
this is a horror classic but there wasn't much horror there were maybe about 2 somewhat scary parts. I also thought that it was a little long. Other wise good movie its worth watching.
Before The Exorcist came out, Rosemary's Baby was considered one of the scariest movies. Well, The Exorcist rewrote the rules by delivering shocking visual horror. Rosemary's Baby is all psychological suspense. So don't expect gory deaths and cheap jolts. Mia Farrow is superb in this.
as a woman who just had a baby lol frankly this movie scared me..its not visualy scary..just the idea that ..that could happen is kindof scary..I don't know. Its a good movie though, I heard their going to remake it..should be interesting.
The story follows Rosemary Woodhouse, a bright but somewhat naïve young woman, and her husband Guy, a struggling actor, after they move into a New York City apartment. Their new neighbors are an elderly couple, the Castavets, who seem meddlesome and a bit absurd, but harmless. The Woodhouses want to have a baby; on the night they plan to try to conceive, Rosemary has dizzy spells and passes out, experiencing a dream or vision that she is being raped by a demonic presence (see incubus).
A few weeks later, she finds out that she is pregnant. Guy lands a small but noticeable part in a play when the man who was originally cast goes suddenly and inexplicably blind. For the first three months of her pregnancy, Rosemary suffers agonizing abdominal pains, loses weight instead of gaining it, and craves meats such as "blue" steak (barely seared on both sides), and raw chicken liver.
Guy is cast in a sitcom that garners him even more attention, and a number of film studios are eager to sign him up. Following clues left to her by an older friend, who goes into a coma and dies before revealing the whole story, Rosemary comes to suspect that her neighbors are part of a Satanic cult with designs on her as-yet-unborn child, and that her husband is working with them in exchange for his career advances.
An increasingly disturbed and unstable Rosemary becomes convinced that her neighbors plan to use her child as a sacrifice to Satan and the efforts of her husband and neighbors to dissuade her from this idea are in vain. At the end of the movie, it is revealed that Rosemary was almost exactly right when Minnie and Roman tell her the child is the son of Satan and that all of Guy's recent success has been due to the deal he made with them to let Satan father their child. At the movie's end Rosemary sneaks next door to kill the demon child but instead begins to mother it leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions about the future of Rosemary's baby.
