having seen this film a few times now, i am comfortable giving it only three stars. despite the terrific performance by gary oldman (a true dramatic chameleon), and the novelty of seeing courtney love in her first performance, the film does tend to drag. also, even though this aspect is actually quite true to life, the nancy spungen character portrayal is so obnoxious & obtuse, it's a wonder no one killed her sooner.. which brings me to the controversy. there never was 100% certainty as to the details of nancy's death, or sid's for that matter. it's likely that we'll never know whether it was murder or suicide, or whether his overdose was intentional, despite what many believe. what i did like about the film's take on this was their avoiding the definite. i apreciate a flick that lets me make up my own mind, especially when it comes to disputable facts.
all that aside, i still think this flick is mandatory viewing for anyone who's ever been involved in a punk scene. for those who haven't, it remains an interesting character portrait. hope you enjoy!
there are other inconsistancies with this movie, many of which (involving the sex pistols) seem to be viewed from the point of view of Malcom McLaren thus are a unfair reflection of the four band members and their working relationship with each other (I think Rotten, Cook and Jones are all very poorly portrayed)
I have read TONS about Sid Vicious and the Sex Pistols, and I think I waited way too much to watch this movie.. It was awesome!
I'm not a Gary Oldman fan, but I must admit, he did an EXCELLENT job portraying Sid.. Even though Johnny Rotten said later that the way he portrayed Sid was superficial, I think he still did a very convincing job, I couldn't help but to forget a couple of times that who I was watching in the movie was Gary Oldman and not the real Sid.
Talk about your dysfunctional lives! Add to that all the drugs, booze and zero control over a career where people can and will take advantage makes it simply amazing either of them lived as long as they did! And yes the movie dragged a bit, but it was still worth watching once at least. And i too would still like to hear about what really ended their lives. Murder, suicide maybe both and more to it? I give this one a 4/5 but would have liked to see it made just a bit differently!
Awesome. It's sad but beautiful in a way. I love sid and nancy, the people and the film. Also I love that song at the end and when they kiss by the garbage cans.. they use it in the Simpson's parody of Sid and Nancy.
This was an excellent movie and Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors.
This movie shows how one should never get involved with someone who will bring them down. Nancy had a lot of love to give but didn't know how to love because of her neediness and emotional problems and the fact that Sid was easily lead spelled disaster.

this is a true story about the pitfalls of being in the rock and roll business. this moie is very depressing yet very well done. i highly recommend this movie.
This film is amazing at expressing angst and naivety. I love it. It really does leave you feeling both fulfilled and empty, like you need to know more.
Intensely depressing! I really like this movie a lot. It is a real downer but given the subject matter if it were anything but then it would have been a failure on the part of the film makers. I think the movie really captures the feel of the darker side of the "rock 'n' roll lifestyle". It was well acted, particularly on Gary Oldman's part. Overall this film is great and if you have'nt seen it you should.
