The 400 Blows is a good story of delinquency, or should I say mistaken delinquency. One would only fall in love with the character of Antoine. The movie is directed wonderfully by Francois Truffaut. Paris is a beautiful city and it is great to see it on film. The film, however, was a little difficult to get into for me, but overall, it was a pleasant movie. 3/4 stars.
This new wave french style by Francois Truffaut didnt really work much for me. It is surely boring if you compare it to movies of nowadays, but i dig the originalty somewhow. The positive things is while it is a boring movie, you dont really get bored, so I guess it is a good movie. It won several awards in the 50s. Maybe a one watch for film art lovers! The main character is lovable!
An interesting foreign film about the troubled life of a young boy growing up in the 50's. His parents are usually away and don't prefer to have him around, so he spends most of his time with his friend, skipping school and enjoying petty theft. The ending of this film speaks volumes. I also heard there was a few sequels made so I'll probably be checking them out as well.
This is a film some of us saw for the first time in art film houses. Subtitles are a challenge but hearing the French is great too, especially when you are trying to remember what you retained from French 101. Puddleducks said because of the mature content he was gonna put this on his "Adults Only" Playlist.
The subtitles are pretty easy actually. I dont even think you need the dialogue to follow the movie. It is totally expressionistic and the noir style adds all that is there.
If you can get through the subtitles and the "insiderhood" of some of Truffaut's cinematic technique, you'll be treated to one hell of a story that absolutely defines teen angst decades before that term entered the mainstream lexicon. Antoine Doinel is one of the great characters of any story-telling medium, plain and simple, and Truffaut along with actor Leaud examine this character over the course of 20 years and 5 films, which is, as far as I know, a first and only in film. An absolute (and literal) trip, with an incredibly witty screenplay by Truffaut, makes this a must see for anybody who considers themselves film-knowledgeable!
