Set during World War II, a story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.
Definitely a movie to tug at the heart strings. Not for the weak of heart. The last 10mins are gripping, so hang in their..Only because I don't really see this boy doing this, I can only give it 8.5/10,,sorry.

There were no children in the camps. End of story. Films like these, playing on one's heart strings, make it seem like only Jews suffered atrocities in WWII: 20 million Ukrainians systematically starved to death in the streets of Kiev by Stalin met as abhorrent criminal ends. Four million Gentiles also found their last days in the camps alongside their Jewish brethren. We habitually overlook and forget about them because just about all films about WWII focus on the plight of the Jews. For a broader view, an internationally lauded "Katyn" is a must. And as for documentaries, I urge everyone to watch "The Soviet Story" for a real horror movie experience.
Truly, great movies are hard to come by in these times. Sure GI Joe, Avatar are exciting, adrenaline pumping, movies, made with cutting-edge technology, but can they match the caliber of this movie right here? The answer is a loud and resounding NO.
Where do I begin? Lemme rub these tears off for a second. The whole movie builds up Asa Butterfield's character, Bruno. You get to know him, get to smile and chuckle at him, get to love him. And really, a child's heart and soul does not feel prejudice, and that is where I think Bruno really shines. He doesn't get why the Jews are discriminated against, and his innocence and courage really goes a long way to the audience in understanding his point of view and what he's thinking. ~~
Saying that, I have got to say that Asa Butterfield's performance, one of the best child performances I have ever seen, right up there with young Kyle Reese from Terminator 2, or Caulkin from Home Alone.
As I stated before, the movie centers around Bruno, and the audience gets to know him. Halfway through the movie, when he threw the ball over (not a spoiler, I don't think), I started to suspect what he might do, and I was like, "NO WAY". And during the last 25 min of the movie, I was shouting at my laptop, telling him, "STOP, what are you doing? You stupid kid, why didn't you pay attention to your tutor? Why, god, why?" And the last 10 min, I couldn't stand to watch it, peeking through my fingers, my stomach started to knot up, senses started to elevate, adrenaline pumping. And at the end of the movie, I was like, "Wow, *teary eyed* how the hell are you *sniff* going to let a movie *sobsobsob*end this way?"
Yeah, I get into a movie. But that's how you know it's a good movie, you care and you get emotional, and you also know when you start yelling at the laptop/TV and they don't listen to you. :) In retrospect, I really liked how the movie showed a vantage point from the German side. You never really got to know what kind of life the Germans led when you learned about the Holocaust, and I thought this movie filled in the puzzle pieces in my mind.
Overall, 5/5 I cannot stress how much you need to go see the movie if you have read my comment all the way to here if you haven't seen it yet. I know that this will be on my DRAMA playlist, and I invite you all to go browse my wondrous selection along with other popular titles organized into appropriate playlists by yours truly. Check it, watch it, and enjoy. :)
that people feel they have to put "moving" and "opens your eyes" when they leave comments about this movie. I do wonder how people actually feel.
Were you really "moved" by this movie, is it inspiring you to do something grand?
It "opened your eyes"? Really? You didn't know Jews we're the primary target of Nazi's?
Was there anything in this movie you hadn't already known, if there is I'm certain your 15 or under.
The ironic this is, is that I absolutely adore this movie(great filming and acting mainly by of course the two little boys), though I feel others do for the wrong reason or feel they need to or else they might be racist?
This is such a good movie..tho befor u watch it be prepared ..its sad..
it makes me soo mad what they did to them..hitler made them think it was a whole race that was bad when really it was them!.. and hitler was just a stupid coward..when he knew that he lost he killed himself..instead of faceing americans because he knew he was wrong ..this movie makes me wanna kick that boys dad in the balls..
I loved the movie in its whole. The whole movie amazed me. THe ending was in fact a stunner and a cruel image to have in your life, no matter who you are.
[SPOILER]
The boys holding hands and promising companionship even at a time so cruel humbled me.
Hitler has truely shown us the brutality and hatred that human kind is capable of. He also has shown us how fragile and gulible we are, as humans. The art of persuasion is a dangerous thing when put into the wrong hands. This movie protrays innocence in the darkest of times and allows me to believe that we are able to someday get rid of all of the discrimination and brutality in the world. I will give this movie a 5/5. I love it. :)
This film sanitizes the real conditions in the concentration camps. Also it presupposes only Jews were the victims in the camps. I am remembering the Millions of Gentiles Murdered by the Nazis
There is no disputing the simple fact that the Jews were the principal victims of the Third Reich. It was an essential tenet of the Nazi creed that the New Europe could not be born until every Jew on the continent had been exterminated. And the Nazis went about their task with inhuman efficiency.
Yet Nazi hatred was expansive, even ambitious. It embraced Slavs and Gypsies; pacifists and Communists; Soviet POWs; Catholic priests, monks, nuns, lay brothers and seminarians; Jehovah's Witnesses and Protestant pastors; and anyone with a physical or mental impairment. Or any intellectual who got on their nerves.Nazi hatred knew no limits, and by 1945 at least five million Gentiles had fallen victim to it, three million of them in the same gas chambers alongside their Jewish siblings.
This movie was superb, and the end is the best part of the movie. I say watch it just for the end. Amazing! It really makes u think on different levels. I watched "Eichmann" just yesterday, but seeing this makes movies on WW2 just enjoyable again.
Words can't truly describe this movie. It was sad, powerful and had deep meaning. Ending was completely unexpected. Worth watching and buying BUT parents should watch first to help their children with the ending. 5 out of 5 stars.
To force a top official Nazi to FACE THE FEELINGS of what the Jews were going through, portrayed through the innocence and complete non judgment of children, was truly brilliantly done! Heart stopping Reality Check!
