This film is about a hyper-vigilant employee of the department of public safety who, while training his young female replacement, has to track down a missing girl who he is convinced is connected to a paroled sex offender he is investigating.
Version #12 and version #15 are the same BASIC film, but TOTALLY different editing and scenes!! Version #12 is MUCH edgier and harsher, while #15 is soft, paints a TOTALLY different picture, and could (almost) be a different film! Just FYI! As for my opinon, I am going to watch both prior to posting my feelings, and go from there.
Director Andrew Lau may have been influenced by a film here and there but all in all pulled his vision off. Paced through the first hour or so this movie builds a foundation and presents a fine finished product. I love the way Gere's character teeters on the brink throughout. I'm not necessarily a Gere fan but I dare say this is one of his finest performances aside from An Officer and a Gentleman. 3/5. Good. Did anyone else notice two scenes seemed to have repeated.
Oh, and, "When you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you."
DONT WATCH THIS MOVIE! I'm really not a fan of this movie. Firstly, it didn't feel like a thriller to me at all. Also, there were a few loose ends

like who left the circled newspaper in the diner for Gere to see and why is never explained, they also never looked into the tan car description to find the perps
Also the ending was predictable after

they clearly state that the beautician is involved from the middle of the story
And the movie felt rushed a little bit without much development of the story.

So Gere gets fired and figures out the whole thing in one day and also solves a the college girl's the same day? Come on, give me a break
It is made for tv. The story is weak and there are unanswered questions. The mans job description was to locate offenders and not to be a private detective, therefore he seemed to be not taken seriously by the police or other departments which is sad really. I give it 3 stars
Wow Richard Gere in a thriller, what a pleasant surprise. This movie really makes you uncomfortable. People really aren't who you expect. Makes you want to keep you kid locked away..forever!!
A really grim flick about a nasty subject, Richard Gere played his role pretty well I thought with Clare Danes and even Avril Lavine staring. Advice, this is really not for kids! 8/10
I thought that it was so,so it could've been better, it touched on a touchy subject of the rising number of sexual offenders in this country and just how poorly our judicial system operates. What I didn't like was the part that Gere played a social worker trying to be a hero on his last days as a social worker. It would've been better if rather than withholding evidence he would have had a cop that he was working with and they could've still solved it without all the holes being shot in the plot. You know he's attacted by a wolf, arms mangled, and there's no police report, no hosital, it kind of just went on without filling in so... many loose ends.
Not your average Gere movie but pretty good. He was the bad & good guy. The movie had a good story line that made you think about how sad our system really is. 7/10
