The Great Rock N Roll Swindle is for the most part a mock rock-documentary charting the short and explosive career of the British punk band the Sex Pistols, who, what the lacked in musicianship more than made up for in controversy in a career that lasted the relatively short period between 1976 and 1978.
The story as it is, revolves around the Sex Pistols Manager Malcolm McLaren and his plan to swindle as much money as he can from as many record companies as he can with a band who can't play (this is the actual movie plot which is entwined around the real story of his tenure as manager and the bands notoriety for their less than perfect behaviour both on stage and especially off it).
The film is a mix of actual footage of the band over the two years they were together, from performances and some clips of them off stage, to the bands infamous appearance on the "Tonight" show with Bill Grundy, along with extra footage shot after vocalist Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) had quit the band.
The film in truth serves little purpose as to massage the ego of Malcolm McLaren while playing down the role of Johnny Rotten and original bass player Glen Matlock, although in later years the original band have re-formed, this does serve as a document of just how could they could have been without their managers interference, other than that though it is, for the most part incoherant dribble which as I have said is more about the manager and his plans than the group.
If you want a true representation of the band I would suggest Filth And The Fury the sex pistols documentary where the band tell it in their own words.
That was the weirdest film/documentary I've EVER seen..
McLaren is a freaken clown, and the story gets kinda boring at parts, but you can't help but keep watching because Sid is in the movie, and it's the only thing that makes that entire movie worth to watch.
Like always, Sid was outstanding.. Sid in Paris and singing C'mon Everybody and Something Else are awesome classics!
