In what would cause a fantastic media frenzy, Clifford Irving (Gere) sells his bogus biography of Howard Hughes to a premiere publishing house in the early 1970s.
Thats what they supposedly all get ! What a joke ! Slap on the hand , that's what it is . This is a movie ! Like everyone thinks we are revealed the whole unmitigated story ! Like Watergate is such an unmitigated revelation ! BOY , the populace are so bright ! We are given a plausible scenario and we run with the ball ! Whooh , Weer so smart ! Richard Gere is a pleasure to see outside his typecast ! He looks confused , It almost compliments the character in this situation , by the seat of the pants , just like the real guy ! All in all , GOOD ENTERTAINMENT and good acting . The truth about the Kennedy assassination will also one day be known by the populace ! No , Nixon couldn't have had anything to do with that ! 5 STARS !
Some movies you see because the story interests you. Some you see because people are raving about it. With The Hoax I had both reasons going for me, but it still wasn't enough to pull me through this one. Gere is in over his head with this role, unable to reflect the breadth and depth that his character demands, or even to make him likable. In the film he portrays Clifford Irving, an unsuccessful writer who claims to have attained access to Howard Hughes, the reclusive billionaire, for the purposes of writing Hughes' autobiography. Along with his bumbling sidekick writer and research assistant (Alfred Molina), and some slapstick research at the Department of Defense and the Library of Congress, Clifford manages to learn enough about the hermit-tycoon to convince a publisher that he's telling the truth. It quickly becomes more than they bargained for when they stumble upon incriminating evidence involving Mr. Hughes, and then president, Richard Nixon. Meanwhile, his girlfriend (Marcia Gay Harden) becomes rightfully suspicious of his fidelity to her, and Clifford slowly begins to lose his mind under the pressure.
Great story. Wrong actor. Gere is unable to rise to the occassion and deliver a convincing performance of the turmoil that must have gripped Irving by the throat. We end up with a wishy-washy version of the scoundrel-con-man, who doesn't even warrant the slightest sympathy or concern. Gere gives us a cartoon paper cut-out of his character, unworthy of the big screen. Meanwhile, the vast talents of Molina are wasted as his bumbling, stuttering sidekick. I would have preferred to see Molina in the main role and Gere supporting. That might have been worth the price of admission.
Yes there is! Just play the download and the sound comes in after the titles have been shown. Last two reels are a bit sticky though - not bad, just pause while it downloads.
