An American citizen is trapped in Cambodia during tyrant Pol Pot's bloody "Year Zero" ethnic cleansing campaign, which claimed the lives of two million "undesirable" civilians.
I first watched this movie several years ago but still find it emotional and very disturbing. I always get chills at the end when you hear that song on the radio..dont want to spoil it so I wont say any more..
10/10
A triple Oscar winning British film about the Cambodian genocide of the late 70's focussing on the true stories of a group of British and American journalists caught up in the chaos of the evacuation. Although I don't think the movie fully conveys the actual horrendous scale of the slaughter which ensued (and the countless numbers who died of starvation) it is a fantastic story and a brilliantly made film. The scenes involving the gun toting Khmer Rouge soldiers (many of them children) are so brutally realistic it feels almost like one is watching actual footage of events, the fact they are actors does not even cross one's mind.
The short, four year reign of Pol Pot serves as a vicious indictment of American foreign policy.
This film is great for facts about The Killing Fields, but I cant watch it but once..it will make you think alot..and break your heart, itmakes you wish you could have put your hand out and took them all out of there before the worst happened.
I may have seen it long time back, but I can't seem to remember the story or any of the scenes in the movie, though the title do ring a bell somewhere. However, I am not going to watch this movie, I can't bare to see it. Because, I did visit Cambodia recently and was awestruck at architectural wonder of the temples of Angkor in Siem Reap and then had to visit the capital's genocide museum with remains of Pol Pot Massacre in 1970s, it just broke my heart. I couldn't even look at the pictures I took in there properly. Its such a shame how a great ancient culture, people with so much talents could do this to one another. Pol Pot was a Cambodian himself, a villager who grew up to be a dictator, a war criminal.. It just doesn't seem to make any sense.. . . Why do we humans do such horrible things to each other? Why do we kill mercilessly? What do we gain by wiping out an entire race of people. In the world where we are combating to protect the flora and Fauna, we love our pets but why can't some of us able to give the same amount of respect to other human beings?
