I too think we are short of a word that denotes this kind of film: "western" is misleading, so I think we are stuck pro tem with "Australian western" (a bit like Australian burgundy). In any case, whatever you call it, it is very well done. If you want intelligent dialogue, particularly nasty violence and gore, social aperçus of the time, and even a little enlightment on the situation of the aboriginals in the white tide that was engulfing them - you have them here.
I wish South Africa, no longer an international pariah, would make something similar in their less empty, more colourful country: I haven't seen a decent S.A. "western" since "The Hellions" in 1961! (10/10)
Well-written and well done. Nick Cave is obviously multitalented. This movie is all about detail and nuance so if you want a shoot-em-up western this is not it. It's a very realistic depiction of rustic, brutal life in early Australia. Great acting, without a lot of dialogue. 9.5/10
Nick Cave actually wrote the screenplay for this. Being a huge fan of his music, as soon as I heard he had written a screenplay I had to see the movie.
The dialog is engaging and poetic, not to mention a well acted interesting story. I like that the main protagonist is caught in between the law and his outlaw family. It's easy to side with both antagonists which makes a very well balanced story that in my opinion was perfectly paced.
To call this a western, is a fallacy!
This is an Irish/English conflict which takes place in Eastern Australia.
This is the brutality of the English and their 'English way' of life.
This is about the terror they imposed on the population, which reflected in turn on the nature of the so called criminal.
The romanticism of the agrieved has been glorified in the poetry and prose of the times.
In all of their colony's.
In the America's as well as Canada, India or where ever they imposed British rule.
This film is an amazing depiction of colonial Australia.
Australia remained broadly under British influence, whereas America went it's own way. This is the reason the British were able to step in and largely stop the wholesale slaughter of the Aboriginals which was beginning to occur. Unfortunately they were powerless to do anything about the native Indian's plight so they were virtually wiped out.
Guy Pearce,Ray Winstone,and John Hurt all give outstanding gritty performances in this true to style revenge western.
The action is very real,with no glory of the violence,which has resulted in a very moving and desturbing western.
I must say that I have enjoyed this film each time that I have watched it.

only if you haven't seen many foreign films.
Australian films are on average better than US.
First time I tried to watch this over amonth ago, it disappeared half way through.

Outstanding acting by Winstone.
This was deffinatly a very wierd kind of "western"! The story was ok, but it could have been much better! The ending just leaves ya hanging with very little point! So i give it 3/5 only because the few good parts!
It started out fast paced then..well, it kinda slowed down a bit. There was a good plot to the movie but for it to be the best there should have been more action. I think Mr. Fancy Pants should have been shot like a rabid dog. The Sarg should never have thrown the keys to the ground. I did give the movie 4*'s though for merit and concept.
I thought the pace of the film was perfectly appropriate to the development of the story and the characters. I call a movie slow paced when it is rife with inessential details and superfluous events unnecessary to that development. This movie does not fall into that category at all. I thought it was fantastic. The setting and the plot were original and unique, everything about it was totally real and gritty, the way a real western ought to be. This one certainly gets an 8/10. Brilliant.
This was an extremely slow paced movie, but I enjoyed watching it.
The middle brother, Charlie, is the one given the proposition..to find and kill his older brother, (who is the leader of their gang) or they will hang his younger brother Mike on Christmas Day.
I rated this movie 4 stars.
