My roommate went to go see this movie before I did and she said it was a horrible movie and i was so mad because i really wanted to go see it. It took me all this time to finally see it and im here to say that this was an excellent movie. I loved every bit of it. And to top it off its a true story! so i give this 2 thumbs up and 5/5 10/10 100/100!
Engaging true story that has two great actors and a very skilled british director presenting an aspect of life very few of us will ever experience.
Foxx is brilliant ( this could be his second oscar ) ,forever playing new roles and this one made you even forget who he was you were seeing..Downey Jr ,what can I say?..he has been around and he should get more credits for his works than he's had .4/5 if not more.
Even though this movie is based on true events,it seems the hidden message was the lack of mental health support for the greater los angles area!Also its not for the thrill seeker!It can be boring at times!
What a great statement on how society sees the less fortunate and how we can all fall into the trap of thinking that we can 'fix' someone or something that we deem to be broken just to feel good about ourselves..What superb acting and it reeks of oscars..:)
Mr. Foxx & Downey are brilliant actors in this film. Look for Nelsan Ellis (David)in the future. I have a feeling he will be a bigger name than he is today. If mental illness somehow bothers you or you don't like slow character- development film, this isn't for you.
Yes you are right about the world and how it might be better without people with mental illness but then..think if that was so, then we wouldn't really have a real world, wouldn't we..Our world is made up of so many gifted and talented people. As you said in this column, Bach had mental problems yet still he was one of the greatest artist ever born. Robin Williams have bi-polar yet he one of the funniest comedians I've ever known. Without them in this world, we wouldn't have laughter. Without them in the world we wouldn't have peace, music something that you can listen to and close your eyes and see love, hate, happiness..all of the feelings in the world. This movie touched me very well and brought a side out of Jamie Foxx that I've never saw. Don't get me wrong, he is a terrific actor, beautiful singer and hilarious comedian but this movie was totally different. He portrayed this man life and made it his own. This movie deserves an Oscar. Great Great Movie. I didn't forget about you Robert. You are a terrific actor as well. I know it must have excited you to work with such a great actor. Your role was very well played. You are also very handsome. However you being handsome have not pushed aside my thoughts and I'm pretty sure the world's as well..that you played this character just like it was your very own. Keep up the good work. I Love you Both and I hope to meet you again Jamie just like we did in 2005 in the Mall in Miami Florida in the Louis Vuitton Store and snap more pictures. That's was one of my best years. Meeting you was such an honor. I still have that picture. Take care.
Wouldn't the world be perfect if there were no people with problems such as mental illness? Many gifted actors and musicians are/were mentally ill and their talent was their outlet. Robin Williams is bi-polar. And, so many more musicians as far back as Bach to the present had/have mental illness.
The acting was excellent. The movie was a true story of a Julliard dropout who did not know he was schizophrenic; yet the only peace he could attain was through the calm of music to quiet the voices in his head.
Not every movie speaks to everyone; however this topical story covered many issues i.e. savant talent coupled with mental illness, homelessness and hatred. The gift of music for calming the soul of this man, and the power Steve Lopez took upon himself to strive to help someone so gifted yet so ill.

Yes, it's sad that so many mentally ill people are out on the street. It is not their fault. Our government and health care institutions have let them down. They need medical treatment, help and a great friend like Steve Lopez proved to be to Nathanel Ayres.
This movie tried too hard to be something great. In the end, it was nothing more than a plea for sympathy of the downtrodden. I see enough of that on the news every day. I found myself drifting off in thought at least 5 times during the film, thinking about subject matter totally unrelated to the movie because it could not hold my attention
I for one loved this movie! i agree with real life is always boring next to the glam of Hollywood! but this was an EXCELLENT movie!!Brought me to tears.. we need more people out there in this world who actually take time to care and not be so selfish.. A little bit goes along way! 10/10
the movie was quite slow. not a good watch if you're half awake. but it was a good drama, it's deep, bitter-sweet and quite artistically done. the movie brings some form of abstractness to the silver screen and i think the take is successful.
