It's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby).
Only Ben Kingsley was redeeming factor in this film
[SPOILER]
Kids living at home with filthy mouths doing all sorts of illegal things while residing in said parents' home? "The Wackness
Another less-than-enjoyable tale of people trying to numb the pain"
High-school drug dealer Luke (Josh Peck) and his therapist/client Dr. Squires (Ben Kingsley) both struggle to handle their misery, their drug use and their need to get laid. While Luke tries to compensate for his parents’ financial woes and falls for Squires’ step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby), the doc contemplates splitting from his wife (Famke Janssen) and makes out with a freewheeling hippie (Mary-Kate Olsen).
Big question: Can writer-director Jonathan Levine’s coming-of-age stoner movie, set in 1994 New York, tell us something new about adolescent stress and late-adulthood regret?
Skip it: It’s prime time for eye-rolling as “The Wackness” unconvincingly labors to understand its sad sacks (such as a pothead who has nothing to talk about with her man unless they’re stoned) with lines like, “Sometimes it’s right to do the wrong thing.” The nonstop ‘90s references (Hey, remember Zima?!) will also have you groaning, even if you don’t consider a Kingsley-Olsen makeout session a sign of the apocalypse.
Catch it: If you agree with Squires that it’s unwise to trust anyone who doesn’t smoke pot and doesn’t listen to Bob Dylan. You may want to give this policy a trial run before making it permanent.
Bottom line: On some level, “The Wackness” succeeds in endorsing depression over suicide and the bittersweet opportunity to savor life’s every agony. But only Thirlby becomes someone who seems like a real person—one of many signs that the movie’s less rooted in human connection than characters smooshed together by a script that’s plenty messed up on its own.
Good Movie.
It hits home with how i felt growing up & the problems we all
think is life or death at the time. Josh Peck shocked the hell out of me in his role
I got ALOT more respect for the guy
and Ben Kingsley played the coolest therapist ever.
"See, I focus on the dopeness, U focus on the wackness"
This is realy a fantastic comedy. It was truly hilarious and touching at the same time. It was original and just overall fantastic. Its not for everyone, i watched it with 2 friends and they just sat there while i was Laughing on some parts and trying not to cry on others. If you want another slapstick comedy with no meaning look else where. If you want a smart, touching, hilarious comedy check this out you wont regret it. 10/10
you know it takes tv stars a bunch of .. movies to make it in movies. look at josh pecks counter part in drake.. doing paradoy movies and drunk movies and no one ever expected josh to surpass him but he did. this movie was flat out amazing. josh peck is going to be an oscar nominee somewhere down the road. 5/5
for those of you who dont like it obviously you didnt go through things like this ..anyway..this movie was REAL straight up it didnt have that hollywood glam or the fake situations fabricated to fit the story it was just a movie which we can relate to besides the new york thing i live in cali so it was different i guess the whole time i was watching it i wondered if he was going to ever get his ass jumped by some gang members but i guess in his 90's there werent any to f- up his life lol point is watch it if your a down to earth chill non judgmental person who enjoys watching movies that DONT fit into your everyday hollywood scene period.
this movie was not really that good to me..I really liked luke and the doctor but it was a little slow for me. this was my era too but I have to say I didnt care for the trends in the 90s when it was the 90s
You know wot?? about time they made a film about my teenage years 91 - 97 etc wen HipHop hit the main stream! wen NewYork killed it! I loved this movie, for that, it completely reminded me of my youth jus by the soundtrack! excellent! I would love to see more movies, stories about that Era, early to the mid 90's! Great decade! for Hiphop 10/10
that was actually much better than i thought it would be, the old school music, the real life situations of some of us while growing up, the coolness and the wackness of it all
9/10 for the style and the way it was done to be original from someones life, yet common like the same old story
After months of boring and disappointing movies i finally managed to see something with a bit of common sense without being anything from the other world. Great low budget movie with a lot of meanings about life. I truly suggest you to watch it. You might find it slow but hey it's a dialog based movie, what do you expect?? Climax of the movie?? The dog..named jesus christ hahahaha.
In all 4/5
