This was a wonderful, thrilling and suspenseful tale of two individual of prominence fallen, that finds redemption in a developing admiration and love towards one another as unexpected advocates. And there more to the film which I will not spoil here, enjoy the perils of asian.
(9/10) Almost made me cry. As international as "55 Days in Pekin" with Charlton Heston and Ava Gardner, who was also a Russian Countess down on her luck, but this is a much more serious film.

The Countess's emigré family, apart from her and her daughter Katja, are the worst kind of snobs: poor snobs. They are quite ready to accept what money the Countess earns at the night club to live on, and get her to raise the extra cash to buy false papers to flee to Hong Kong, but neglect to get any for her. and tell her bluntly that her continued presence with the family would compromise their efforts to be received into genteel society again. They even want to rob her of her daughter. What kind of person the sister-in-law is, is evident when she calls their helpful neighbour Mr Feinstein "You dirty Jew". I would not have been very sorry if they had been strafed by a Japanese plane once the daughter had been retrieved, which almost did happen.
Another classic by James Ivory. Astonishing movie, but what watching it really makes me feel, is the certainy that we must not forget how terrible war is for humanity, what it does to every individual captured in it's momentum.
