For the record, I'm also ashamed you're British. Who exactly is going to execute any British still living in Ireland, you? There are plenty of Irish living in Britain in case you hadn't noticed, so what's it to be, forced repatriation like the BNP? Or are you sticking to your summary executions?
The IRA have disbanded, their leaders are now working on it politically and peace has been agreed. The 'Real' IRA are made up of egotistical, lower ranking ex IRA members who can't hack the fact they aren't big men anymore. They don't want peace because they hate the English and would rather start another bombing campaign than accept the fact they are now non entities.
Their bomb in Omagh, Northern Ireland was designed to derail the peace process. It killed 29 people including 9 children, a woman pregnant with twins, and some tourists from the Republic (their own people). They were condemned by virtually the whole of Ireland, including the IRA's former leaders, and throughout the world. Call them Muslim and I bet you would too.
They haven't killed anyone recently because nobody will fund them but given a chance they'd happily blow you to pieces for one column inch in the newspaper, whether you support them or not. Think before you casually make such offensive and ignorant statements.
For the record, Northern Ireland belongs to the Irish people and if you still don't understand that after all this time why don't we have Kent or Suffolk occupied by the frogs..that would teach you something..but i doubt.I am sure Ken Loach didn't think this movie for the likes of you.GREAT FILM to remind us of an ongoing struggle....and one of the biggest anomalies in democratic Europe.
The 'likes of me'? Would that be the type who doesn't support terrorism? Guerrilla tactics against British soldiers and politicians are one thing, terrorist atrocities against innocent civilians (the Real IRA's MO) are quite another. Sinn Feinn are working on this issue by democratic means and the IRA no longer kills people, is that not good enough for you? Since I gave no opinion on whether Northern Ireland should be under British rule or not, but that a terrorist organisation was wrong in it's tactics, I'm forced to conclude from your indignant response that it is not. I sincerely hope this never occurs, but if a member of your family happens to be ripped to pieces by a 6 inch nail bomb planted by somebody wishing to emphasise a point, that would teach you something, and that I do not doubt.
It's the blase' attitudes of armchair generals like you two casually dolling out death sentences from the comfort of your own home which give terrorist organisations the world over, from the Orange Volunteers to Al Qa'ida, the wherewithal to operate. You are so ignorant that only being directly affected opens your eyes to what you are condoning. The IRA had ample funding from the USA, until Timothy McVeigh and Al Qa'ida started working their evil on American soil, then unsurprisingly all that funding largely dried up. I wouldn't fancy being the poor sap trying to raise funds for the Real IRA in New York post 9/11, put it that way.
This is a great anti-rebellion type of war movie about the Irish, and acting is very, very good, but the story moves on so slowly, and at times it just felt it goes in circles. I honestly fell asleep, but I am not the war kinda person..condidering how many awards the movie won, I expected much much more, and felt disappointed. I think the theme and acting won the awards, but the movie is a bit miserable!
not sure if its a true story or not.. but it has the realistic feel to it. 1/3 of movie should have hit the editers floor. slow paced, sometimes just plain boring.. but it has some moments that are worth the watch.
good movie, realistic. theres a feeling of reality in the slow moving pace, in the stumbling and stuttering. some action but this is no brave heart it is very much real life. 5/5
