This Movie is not for those who know little about film. It is not for the average movie watcher. The music, the picture, the acting, this is a film that demands the deepest of respect. I truly consider myself an afficionado of film.
I have seen many movies in my time, and this is an absolute masterpiece.
Thanks for your comment (bigmike) , I couldn't believe the first comment I saw about this movie by " m..stranger" on this site . It was offensive how shallow and uninformed etc. etc. that person is . I couldn't believe that someone would watch this film and think that way and make those comments. I think they were looking for a hollywood action flick starring Cruise , Diesel , Schwarz.., the Rock or Keaunu ??I was so relieved to see your intelligent comments , it had a calming affect on me . Oh get over yourself Richard Attenborough. I liked it too but I can see why some would find it boring, whether they are a self appointed 'aficionado of film' like your highly esteemed self or not.
What-the-hell!?!? I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is another example of Hollywood, hyping-up a movie, telling us that is the best thing since forever, and sheep jumping on the bandwagon agreeing with them. Because the consequence of saying you hate this whack-ass movie means that you aren't sophisticated enough to get it. Well damn that!! This movie sucks and I aint afraid to say it. And the reason I don't get it, is because there is nothing to get. Horrible, over-hyped movie. Oh, and I am sophisticated , I drink my tea with my pinky in the air ;)
What do you mean you didn't 'get' it? You're right, there was nothing to 'get' and if you spent the whole movie looking for some kind of punchline it could explain why you hated it so much. It is a powerful drama about a man's obsession and ambition consuming him and those around him. Day Lewis also puts in a staggeringly good performance which was worth watching the movie for alone (although the last thing I'd call him in this is 'cute'). If you didn't like it that doesn't make you unsophisticated but many did and that doesn't make them 'sheep', nor does the fact you didn't make you some kind of trailblazing pioneer of truth against the Hollywood machine.
Also, in some places if you talk about your 'pinky' you aren't referring to your finger, if you know what I mean.
In my opinion, one of the best movies of the decade, right next to Lord of the Rings. This movie all surrounds to one main character, Daniel Plainview. & Daniel Day Lewis never fails, whether if it's on stage or on screen. I have never rated a movie so high, 4/4!! What a terrific film. Highly recommend it, if you're not the type who gets bored easily. I'm just a bit disappointed Paul Thomas Anderson didn't win an Oscar for the film, or any films he has done in the past (Magnolia, Boogie Nights).
I couldn't see anyone else portraying this character. If there should be any amazing characters of the decade, it should be this one. Beautifully acted, & highly praised.
This film is alot different from Paul Thomas Andersons other films, in both subject and tone. This maybe because he didnt write the story on his own. I didnt enjoy this film as much as his other works however this is still a brilliant film. Great story and well directed. Some good performances from the actors. I would say it is a bit too lengthy for the subject matter. The ending was excellent. Well worth the watch. 5/5

Took me 3 days to get through this movie..this painfully long and boring bloody movie.. Ive seen many movies and I have to say this is most definitely the biggest load of kak I have ever had to endure..the characters dont evolve..they are the same boring aholes from start to finish. I wish I had never bothered watching this pile of steaming manure.
I just kept hoping it might actually get better..hahahahahaha

Final note.. If I ever read a book this bad, I would burn it and demand to god that I got the time back.
But I didnt like it. This movie was drawn out and seemed very incomplete. The beginning was like 30 minutes of silence. The middle we found out what kind of man he was. The end..well he remained the same man who we found out he was to be. No family, no love, no remorse, just him and his Money or love for a Monopoly. This movie gets a 2.5/5 stars.
Uhh wtf was that? Firstly, the same creepy violin music was playing on and off every 15 minutes. Wich is fine untill after the third/fourth time then you realize nothing is even going down.. like ok? Secondly,Whats up with the storyline.. If I knew I was about to watch two hours of a man & his son buy land I would have just watched a CNN special or some shizz.. Honestly. Also, what happened to the teen years of his son? they skipped the best point of there lives where he gets to rebel against his father & whatnot. Basically my point here in this not so nice review is that the title of this movie should have been called "There Will Be NO Blood". I think Daniel Lewis is an awesome actor. But I just wasn't feeling it this time around. Give it a try, see for yourself. 2/5.. Just cuz DL was in it. lol.

I feel as though I've "sinned" for watching this movie.
If you are into drama, it's a good flick.
Daniel Day-Lewis provides a strong performance and kept me guessing to the end of what his true intentions were. Obsessively competitive is a fair way to describe the main character with a twinge of incredible patience thrown in for good measure. Shrewd, calculating, and determined,, Mr. Daniel Plainview is gonna wanna beat you at every front. Selfishly so.
It behooves you,, if you're gonna deal with Mr. Daniel,, it's best NOT to be a "pretender" ,, a fake,, a fraud. lol ,, he's very passionate about that!
Crude oil has its limitations.
It can lubricate social and intimacy ills to a certain point,, then thereafter,, there is undoubtedly gonna be friction!
Daniel Day Lewis creates one of the most fascinating characters in film history.. Great story, great characters.. I only know one person who didn't like this movie, and he is a complete tool. Enjoy. 5/5
A simple yet powerful tale. Daniel Day-Lewis was superb as always.
I think a lot of people may probably find it boring..even I did at first, but I was determined to watch it with an open mind, and I must say, the extremely detailed characterization of "Daniel Plainview" has to be applauded.
I thought the ending was a bit abrupt though..4/5 stars from me.
Yes you had to think outside the box on this one,but isn't that what all art forms are supposed to do for us? Maybe we've gotten so used to separating entertainment from thought. If William Shakespere was alive today I believe he would have written and directed this.
This was a movie that I didn't even notice was as long as it was.totally engrossing-Lewis' performance is just mesmerizing along with the excellent directing and YES!the weird string music as the score gave the movie a feel and vibe that just be explained-a must watch!!

Loved it. A slow paced character profile of a ruthless and greedy man, played to perfection by Daniel Day Lewis. 10/10 for Lewis, 9.5/10 for the story and film overall. A classic?.... i think so.
There Will Be Blood has a wonderful cast of top-notch actors in their prime, the setting is historical and the events are interesting, however, the peice itself lacks the type of moving consistency that brings a picture together. It was a good movie, but the length and pace were not cohesive enough to make it something I would relish seeing over and over. I do not want predictable, but I do prefer some entertainment infused with my historical events, I thought Dances With Wolves was better!
alot of people are asking what was the point of this movie and where was the plot. open your eyes, the entire movie told a story of a single mans rise from nothing to becoming rich and powerful through the oil industry. the very movie itself was the story. it may be difficult nowadays for some of you if the movie doesnt spell everything out directly but there was nothing difficult to understand about it and yes this movie is a masterpiece. i disagree that this movie is not for the average movie watcher, it is an excellent story and very very easy to follow. granted the first 15 minutes are virtually dialogue free but its only to keep your attention on the events happening. i would recommend this movie to any comprehensible person. 5/5
i agree that the movie itself was the story- but it is easy to lose (not the plot) the point of the story. even though it is slow in parts, the movie is most valuable when viewed as a whole piece- the reality of how some lives were lived at the turn of the century.
a better rags to riches story than jay zees, daniel day lewis delivers another oscar winning performance taking it to 3. he should have won one for in the name of the father as well, this man is the finest actor who ever lived. he really gets lost in the characters he protrays and although i felt this performance was too much like his last, i really believed the intensity of his eyes. the end left me wanting more however it should be seen as a character study rather than a story. the early mining sequences are also fantastic. loved it!
And yet another great film from Daniel Day-Lewis, I've never seen a movie he starred in that wasn't good and this ones no exception. I loved the ending, now if only all preachers would find their ends in that same manner the world would genuinely be a better place for all.
