In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.
At the end of this movie, I would assume, naturally anyone who cares had wondered what the whole point of this movie was, what meaning it held. I certainly thought a whole lot about it, and what it could mean. To me, this movie is not just a shallow thriller/action movie, it never is with Terry Gilliam. In a way, this movie held tremendous resemblance to Terminator 3, in my mind. Please read on.
I highly recommend you read the following, if you saw the movie and would like some food for thought, this is my attempt to explain this movie.
All through the movie, from start to finish, you see the same scene that James Cole dreams about. What does it mean? What is the significance of showing it at the end, once again?

All the clues in the movie point that inevitably he is going to die at the end.
I think that the major revelation in this movie is that the future CANNOT be changed, no matter how you approach it.
Drawing examples from Terminator 3, Sarah Connor has apparently stopped D-Day from happening by destroying the research on it. But it is explained later that it was inevitable that D-Day was going to happen. Even though the machines would try to change the past, hence present & future (butterfly effect), I believe that through inner workings of space, things would play out the way they have played out an infinite amount of times, no matter HOW.
How amazing is it that time is like math? Math is there for someone to discover, math is NOT invented out of nowhere. Basic logic of the universe dictates it, it only matters how you translate it into terms you understand, you cannot explain basic logic. Time is the same. How do you know that in another dimension, another galaxy, that the same exact copy of yourself is existing in a different way, all the while just waiting for us to find a way to travel thru time? The way two James Coles' existed in the same time dimension is just another example of what could happen.
Going back to the movie, I think Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt do a wonderful jobs portraying the seemingly crazy men, and if you reach the end and understand beforehand that the future/past cannot be changed, you will enjoy the movie more. You become so engrossed in wondering why is this & that happening, what is going on, you just have to keep watching on.
I know this comment seems more like a blog, but I just want to let everyone have something to think about if you have wondered about these things or are interested. If you are curious about time, and want to explore your own imagination, or theorize on your own about time and its workings, I HIGHLY recommend you go check out the "Concept of Time" playlist on my page. Not only are they great movies, some of the most popular, but they will also expand what you thought about time, and just make you wonder even more.
Almost get crazy as well:)..I've seen so many films, which had a better twist..I honestly don't understand why this particular twist is so admired..of course the acting was immaculate ..the acting of Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis of course..BUT it was like a Kafka novel..I'm not the fan of these kind of surreal worlds, mainly if it is put on screen.Sorry.
Twelve Monkeys is a good movie on many accounts. The acting from Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt is incredible. The story is very complex, and if you intend to watch it, try not to miss anything; pay careful attention. 3/4 stars.
I tried to watched this when i was like 7 wen it came out and had no idea what the f&*% was going on..but if you cant grab the concept of this movie your stupid..perfect sci-fi..
An excellent sci-fi directed by Terry Gilliam, who also directed "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt deliver outstanding performances, and the storyline is imaginative and challenging.
The ending was very interesting.

Seemed to be a deliberate wild goose chase. There will be other interpretations though; that's the sign of a great ending.
I take it you didn't understand the ending because it fits the movie perfectly. This movie is PERFECT. Grow a brain and then try watching it again. Maybe then you will get the ending.

Note that "ignorance" is not a disparaging word, it merely states lack of information, here of good manners.
They say the ending sucked simply because they don't understand it. Even though all the information needed to "get it" is presented within the movie. I could care less about manners. Also, mind you own business.
A MUST SEE THAT TAKES YOU BY THE 'NADS AND SUCKS YOU IN. IT WILL HAVE YOU ON THE ENGE OF YOUR SEAT, AND, FOR A FIRST TIME VIEWER, YOU'LL BE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHATS GOING ON. AN INTRIGUING MOVIE WITH A ROLLER-COASTER RIDE FOR THE VIEWER. 10/10
Always a brilliant film, LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! 10/10 ALL THE WAY! Definatly one to watch if you've never seen it before. nice and gritty, as though it could actually be real. Fantastic
An enthrawlling movie that keeps you guessing.. Excellent cast and acting.. Very realalistically portrayed Be in the mood to think. the first time you watch it.. Not just a regular sci-fi movie.. Has Many levels that make you think.. A must see with great replay value.. 10/10
