I was a bit disappointed with this film at first, it felt like i had seen this type of premise done before however by the end i was pleasantly surprised. Once the film got into its stride it really got interesting, the storyline draws you in and keeps you watching. Very interesting use of the relationship between the two brothers, which made for a great emotional undercurrent to the film. Although this genre of film has been done before and probably better, ''The Departed'' springs to mind straight away, i felt this was satisfying enough and probably worth a second viewing. Great performances, well worth more than one watch. 4/5
It's pretty sad in parts especially if you have a brother, but that makes it even more awesome in the revenge parts. This is my favorite crime movie and it has an amazing story line. I hope you watch it and enjoy it.
This..this is one of those movies that U could watch a gazillion times and still enjoy. I liked this flick alot. Had some of everything in it..definitely like the "old school" feel it had to it.
Great acting, good story line and dialogue..even better ending.
This is a great movie and if you have the time should check it out.. Whalberg, Pheonix, Duvall and Mendes do a great acting job to accompany an excellant script.. One of the better dark cop/gangster movies to come out.. 9/10..
This is one of the best cop movies I have seen in quite a while.
It has a really dark atmosphere and is actually pretty unnerving to watch.
In some parts the suspense almost killed me.
Excellent screenplay, outstanding acting and a truly harrowing plot.
9/10
Honestly, I never heard much about Joaquin Phoenix until after he was into hip-hop. Now, this guy is my hero. A club owner gets his revenge on the drug dealers. Kind of like how if Johnny Depp were able to do something about the drugs in his club. This would have been what he did.
[SPOILER]
Did you know Joaquin Phoenix`s brother died in Johnny Depps club because of the drugs being distributed there?
I have always been an admirer of James Gray's direction (BTW I am a cinematography major, I do not just read up on this stuff for fun) since his days at NYU film school. He is a very classically minded collaborator. His previous film "The Yards" was a tad lackluster, but this one struck home. The film opens up with a huge sex scene, which is a sure fire way to grab a viewers attention. That is cinematic genius in my book.

Still, this movie is not all shots of Jager and lap dances either, as it does have flaws. Most of my problems with this film come on the technical side of things that your average "joe six pack" type would never care to notice anyway.
As valid as these criticisms may be in a technical sense, they miss the point of the film as a whole. We Own The Night is a beautifully shot and masterfully acted work. The audience is immersed in the gritty, violent world of the NYPD and the suffocating pressure of the Grusinsky family's lives is powerfully felt. The acting, by Wahlberg and Phoenix in particular, is masterful and the moments when the visual and human elements of the film mesh best, such as the terrifying car chase-shootout or the warehouse drug bust, are a joy to witness.
The message of the film is simple: redemption comes through honesty married with sacrifice. It is not ironic or 'clever'. It is not cool or in vogue. And it is perhaps this deliberate marginalization of thematic concerns current in Hollywood which has earned the ire of so many critics. As for the all too easy criticisms which have emerged regarding 70s and 80s period inconsistencies, they pale into insignificance when viewed alongside the self-referential attention to detail in the visual cues of the film. Joseph's (Walhberg) final scene, for example, emerging from the smoke-ruined field, the shot divided evenly between the green of the grass and the yellow of the marsh reeds above, evoking the green and gold badges of the Police Department's lapel honours is truly accomplished.
We Own The Night is a serious, heavyweight police drama. It will be increasingly lauded as the vagaries of fashion in today's film-making pass and are forgotten.

small details in this film, like the missing letters on the mechanical typesriter, the lampshade blocking the fight between joaquin and eva in the suite, the original sound design minimizing the car scene foley emphasizing his hard breathing & eva's screams in the backseat. such details gave a nice depth and realism to the film in a way that wasn't full of mafia movie cliches. the characters were also flawed (w/ mark's character getting shellshock, leaks of information, competing loyalties, etc)
This woman is so hot. I swear this movie is ten times better just because she is in it. I swear I get blue bizalls just watching her be all sexy and what not. The best part of this movie is in the beginning when she is talking all dirty to me. Yeah, I said me. If I close my eyes and listen, I can hear her talking to me. Is that weird? Oh well, she is too fine for me to be coy!
