i have to say the only real thing i liked about this movie is the amazing character performances by leonardo dicaprio and the woman who plays his mother - i think this has to be dicaprios finest work to date. i remember watching this as a child and thinking the boy was actually mentally handicapped and it wasnt until years later that i watched it again and realised it was dicaprio, thats what you call a REAL ACTOR. other then that only the woman who plays his mother really carries this film off. Looking back i would say its their film and not depps as many people say -- anyway all in all a 7/10
Hey wait a minute! I think I've watched this movie before! theres Leonardo Dicaprio too isnt it? A very young Leo! Ya Depp's his brother! some quarellings.. ya now I remmeber I've watched this before. I dont know the story thoroughly though! I might have to watch it agaiN! Daarnit! hahah maybe later!
Outstanding drama film, with a simple but powerful story. Star-studded cast with good chemistry between all of them, and superb performances from everyone. Johnny Depp was excellent as usual, but I must say Leonardo DiCaprio really stole the show in this one; wonderful performance. 5/5 stars.
If you want to see a good man get pushed beyond the limits of emotional endurance in taking care of numerous needy/hungry women in his life.. then watch this movie.
old movies are so much better than movies that are made these days ,i haven't seen a great movie this year just some average movies but this one is wonderful!
This film was absolutely brilliant, i can see why so many people rate it so highly. The level of performance from the two main actors, Depp and Di Caprio, was amazing. The story it told was really heartfelt. A real classic film. 5/5

Yes, they did a wonderful job, the two 'boys'. The supporting cast was just as good! This deserves a spot next to Places in the Heart.
stunning film. absolutely beautiful. why is it that all of johnnys films are so superb? the ending was so sweet. i think the less enjoyable bit out of most of johnnys films that i've been watching recently is that the amazing characters he builds up usually die. and the carefully constructed relationships other characters have with his character can not therefore continue :(

Johnny, and Leo did an amazing bit of acting in this movie as well as all the other people who gave this one true heart! I can't believe i waited this long to watch it. IMO an absolute must see! 5/5! Easy!
as a male viewer this movie made me laugh and nearly cry and feel happy and sadness
its a movie i never ever thought i would enjoy or even watch but im soo glad i did
With a young DiCaprio nominated for an Oscar after his breakthrough performance here, it was clear he would go on to be a successful actor. Depp puts in a reliable performance as the put-upon son who finds solace in the company of waitress, Juliette Lewis. All three deliver memorable performances along with a strong supporting cast.
5/5 10/10 if like me you have avoided this movie you should watch it today its a excellent experiance
