An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world - a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.
I thought this movie should be watched by all parents as well to see what "some" kids go through and experience. It's a heads-up for parents that we need to keep firm "continual" (keyword) guidance if we are to keep our sanity and give these kids a chance at a halfway decent life. Anyway, just my take on this film as well as it being entertainment. Definitely a movie for the bigger kids.
As a kid, when this was read to my 2nd grade class, I fell in love with this book. Every time it was my turn to pick out the book for story time I would choose this one. It captured my imagination.
I haven't read it nor have I picked it since then.
This is a very dark movie and quite frightening at times. It's also very sad and tragic. There are also some heart warming moments, that will leave you with a warm glow.
All of the characters go through love/hate moments and some characters you never really like.
But what a wonderful fairytale/fantasy. All good movies elicit some kind of emotional reaction, which this movie does in spades. This is not a movie for children. This is a movie for adults. It follows all the rules for a fairy tale and no fairy tale was ever all unicorns and rainbows. Every fairy tale I remember has some truly awful things happen. The big bad wolf eats a grandmother, the wicked stepmother poisons/enslaves/plots to kill the heroine and children kick witches into ovens. This movie is no different. This movie also has the ending that fits a fairytale. It's not a logical ending, but a "happily ever after" ending.
The story is very good, the acting and the special f/x are amazing. The plot flows very well, and even the pacing is spot on.
I'm no longer in 2nd grade and haven't been for a number of years, but this movie captured my imagination again, and for the first time.
The movie was so depressing. We have the kids book and think it is a cute story, but the movie takes the kids book to a very gloomy, depressing, destructive place. I need to go watch Barney now for a pick me up. Anyway, I just thought I would share for anyone thinking of seeing it.
it was a little too wild for my imagination!!
i hated the little boy and he's the main reason why i couldnt get into the movie..but all things aside the work done on the creatures faces was amazing so that was good
what a sweet movie
it kind of make u remember when u were a child
its soo easy to go against the grain of what our mothers say to us
but its all done with love
we realise they were right in the end..
love it
couldnt really get n2 it.. boy that little kid is a problem, he def needs a chill pill!! i agree wit someones statement that he runs away from home moms goin outta her mind and he comes back home to eat cake..seriously?.. xpected sumthn more from this not for me
Sadly this film didn't live up to my expectations.
Pretty dull and silly really. Escapism and justification for bad tempered teens seems to be the theme.
Not my cup of tea.
4/10
i dont get it i see comments saying "i feel for what the kid is going thur" im sry but huh? that kid is a spoilt little brat and needs a good slap from his mother. but no he
[SPOILER]
runs away leaving his mother in her own mental nightmare while hes off with the fairies on his little world. and what does he get when it suits him to return home?? CAKE?!?!
anyway as for the movie itself (as a movie ie acting/graphics/etc) it was nt bad in that sense but Defo nt for kids at all, i liked the creatures in this movie tho they looked great :) but again i couldnt really enjoy it cos i couldnt stop thinking what a spoilt little twat! while the girl in the cinema sat next to me was saying aww i feel sry for the kid !! so 7/10 for the appearance of the monsters etc but 2/10 cos i couldnt really enjoy it. sry x
The book appeals to kids and from what I remember, had a softer approach into the psyche of a child's mind.
The movie, for me- was a grown up version of the children's classic.
Great job on the voice acting.
that uneasy feeling as a younger child where you could do nothing to get your frustrations out but yell and stomp and break things u knew were important
for some people that feeling never leaves, the feelings and frustrations you think are going to go away as a child DON'T, but you somehow have to make it work.
I agree that it was not for little kids 100%, but i do not say that critically. I havent read the book, but I understand it was written as a children's tale. BUT, I thought it was done so well, so well adapted to have a meaning that is close to adults, this sort of nostalgia for childhood, a coming of age through stories kind of thing. If anyone has read The Book of Lost Things, they'll know what I mean. But it was FANTASTIC, and not to say that it was completely unsuitable for kids, just not in their understanding, necessarily.
It just got me so excited and mesmerized! I am now in the process of making my own Max Wolf Costume :D
its not what i expected.
its dark and depressing , but i like it .
i guess its shows what the kids goes through in his life and the problems he has to face. 4/5
This is being marketed towards kids? Wonderful film but unbelievably SAD and DARK - even slightly scary in some parts. I have never in my life cried from a movie but this had me in tears at the end. I really liked the film but I wouldn't recommend this to anybody below 4th or 5th grade. It's not a 'happy' movie.
Alright first off this film had some fine talent in it..I am not gonna name names but two of the monsters stole the show for me..but I would bet everyone is gonna have there favorites..the only real problem with this movie was with the first 30 minutes..I just felt it was not needed..the last hour I wanted to see more and more..that is why I have to give this movie just a 7/10..it could have been a direct to dvd..or less time with the boy and more time with the monsters..but again that is just me..and honestly I don't find this to be a kids movie but more so for tween and adults who can fully understand what is going on through out the film..I just don't think young kids can be entertained by this..it was not bright..it was not flashy..so finally great movie for adults and young adults..not for kids..
In 1972 I read this story to my youngest brother, Who commented that it was boring and stupid.
Today I watched it with my six year old daughter, Who kept asking me what was wrong with the boy on the movie, And can we watch tinkerbell.
All I could think about was beating that kid, For biting his mother.
This movie reflects the book. Both meaningless, And boring.
One star.
